Bought a 82574L Single Gigabit LAN port on a 1x PCIe NIC.
From day one, it was playing up oddly, would from a cold start boot up OK, but a reboot it would get Code 10 errors in Win8.1
On a UEFI BIOS there is an arror at boot saying can't continue to load boot ROM.
Tried NVRAM diagnosis but Intels SW says not supporting 82574L.
Got quite annoying after awhile, to the point I was willing to sacrifice it in a firmware flash to see if I could solve the issue.
Not finding any 82574L Firmware I came across the 82583V firmware, nothing to loose I flashed this.

Now I have a 82583 that actually works everytime I boot or reboot.

Any one else experiencing similar issues ?

583 is a different chip, I'm impressed, how did you get that to flash?

I never buy 574Ls but they come onboard with a lot of stuff and seem to work fine. I always disable the option crap if I can.

Hard to find a reason to get one here when single 571s are under 10 bucks, duals are $25 and were meant for servers. (ecc ftw) Although if you need a NIC "right now" you can usually find 574L in a local retail store for $50.

Head on over there, grab the zip file linked
I flashed the 6E000149.EEP to the 82574L and now all is good.
Device shows as 82583V
After boot and reboot LAN shows and no more Code10's

I had a feeling the NVRAM got corrupt on the 82574, but Intel diagnostics wouldn't look at it.
But 82583V works nicely, a lot better than WIFI link to router and shifting files around.
Ran out of PCIe 8x slots so couldn't use the 10Gbe card, very limited with only PCI or PCIe 1x slots left.

The 82574 have been cursed on CentOS/RHEL. Around CentOS 6.2 and now with CentOS 6.5 you needed to update the E1000E kernel module to prevent these NICs from causing a kernel panic after they went a short period of time with limited to no network activity.

Probably why the 82583V got a FW update.

Anyway this should provide a permanent fix as long as you are happy with a device name change, not sure if VM's and passthrough is affected.
