on taobao are some supermicro boards with 270W(up to) support. X11DPi X11DAi X11DPH with VRM upgrade.

i had a X11SRM-F before and this board don't run a Xeon W-2295(165W) even the board supports 165W.
the cascade lake xeon have higher PL4 limit, this wattage can not delivered by stock VRM so supermicro have to upgrade them.

i would open a case at supermicro with your board serial and ask for a VRM upgrade to support the 8274, its worth a try:
The VRM isn't upgraded, the original one is already powerful enough. it's the PWM program which allows the "Amazon type" CPU to be installed.

And once the VRM supports them, the stepping 3 support is only an easy microcode injection thing everyone can do.

the stock VRM ICC_MAX is set to 228Amps.
the 8124M has a TDC of 255A.
the X11DPi X11DAi X11DPH upgrade os ONLY the VRM controller, nothing changed in BIOS/Firmware.

There's also a 18-core 6139 model at even lower price and support all motherboard types, but the performance is 15% lower due to lower TDP.
the 6139 can't hold the AVX512 frequency of the 8124(M), which is the reason for the high TDP.

the 8124M has a PL4 of 452Watts 32 seconds.
the X11DPi X11DAi X11DPH upgrade os ONLY the VRM parts, nothing changed in BIOS/Firmware.
These X11 boards are all using CSD95480, 5 of which can supply up to 350A current to CPU vcore. Well enough for any LGA3647 CPU at stock. After all the hard turbo limit of 8124 is 3.4 all core or 3.5 dual core, with 3.0 all core AVX512. 240W is sufficient for this thing to run at full turbo in most cases. I actually never saw this thing passing 255w in my period of using it.

BTW these 270w SM boards are specifically ordered by one of my acquaintances, the boss of Qifei tech. He did not report any difference in hardware between the old and new versions. The only difference should be the program in the PWM controller. Manual flash is possible but the programmer for this thing is expensive, and you need to desolder it.

Do you know the CPU power design parameters for the EPC621D8A by chance? I found nothing except "205w" in the specs. But I count 6 instead of the usual 5 SMD chokes like on Supermicro, so 12 phase VRM instead of 10? That would be exactly the 20% more power when going from 205 watts to 240 watts. But how big of PL4 can this board handle? I dug around in Google Images but found literally no picture with heatsink off to determine which MOSFET the board uses. I suspect peak 6*60 amps = 360 A with, by looking at Page 15 of the IR3548 datasheet https://www.infineon.com/dgdl/ir3548.pdf?fileId=5546d462533600a4015355cd7476175f suggests no more than 6*50=300 amps to stay within reasonable efficiency envelope.

6 phase instead of 5. the EPC621D8A can not handle 450 Watts. thats not the point. the TDP is still limited to XXX. you can tell it a BUG that the 240W parts do not work on supermicro X11 boards. possibly that is also intended, who knows.
240Watts may be to much over the time, to many RMAs for SM, makes sense for me...

@RolloZ170 Do you happen to have an idle wattage number for a 8124m single and/or dual CPU system? Just a ballpark. There is little info in the forums, probably because nearly no-one is running a Platinum at home. My best guess would be 100 watts for a 1-CPU machine with few peripherals. Contemplating a 4 node proxmox cluster but the energy consumption is prohibitive, since I would be adding 2x100 watts for two MLAG Aristas, and similarly 2x100 watts for two MD1200. That'd be 2200 EUR for idle power per year, ugh. Probably more like 3500 EUR because the room would need active cooling during the summer months.

Not about TDP actually, 185W/205W 8171 and 195W 8272 don't work on old SM boards either. Also there are some 240W/255W ES things runs on these boards without problem. They may be using what intel provides and never cared about these "Amazon type" CPUs until people start asking about it.

A new revision of X11DPI? Here's an X11DAI review with VRM heatsink removed. VRM is TPS53679 and mosfet is CSD95480.

I'm now running X12DPI-N6. There are also those "Amazon type" CPUs (now with 300/330W) that requires new VRM programming. Also no hardware differences seen.

i have also checked my X11SPM. MP2955A controller.
checked again X11DDW-NT looks like the same as X11DAi.
so some X11 use different.

Not about TDP actually, 185W/205W 8171 and 195W 8272 don't work on old SM boards either. Also there are some 240W/255W ES things runs on these boards without problem.
the 240W ES may have NOT the high max. Wattage parameter. the matching configuration in the VRM eeprom may missing.

edit: the exact reason is: the ThermalDesignCurrent(TDC) of these unsupported processors is 255A.
if the VRM is programmed to 228A the CPU is not started over.

i can confirm the Platinum 8124M SRD1Y H0 works on the following boards:
Gigabyte MU71-SU0
Gigabyte MD71-HB0
ASRock Rack EPC621D8a

Hey Rollo.. Thanks for the information but just to confirm those motherboards do support the Xeon P-8124 because i have 2 of them and I've been searching to no end for motherboards that supports these processors until i so luckily stumbled on this forum.

Fortunately, Gigabyte added the microcode for SKL B1(50653) in latest BIOS(see GB support page). that matches the P-8124(18C) and the P-8136(28C)
The ASRock EPC621D8A(and other) needs a modded BIOS to run P-8124/P-8136.

Hey guys , can you please provide some insight or help with the issue my AsRock EPC621D8A system board not booting with the 8124. It is a brand new board i just purchased last week and i installed memory that was both on and off the QVL. I even swapped in another 8124 and the result is the same. I get the below message every time i try to boot. I reached out to ASRock tech support and they said the board may be DOA and I should send it for diagnosis and possibly replacement if it's bad. The issue i have is i didn't mention the 8124 to them since it isn't on the QVL and they may be reluctant to want to diagnose it since a supported processor isn't installed. When I log into the IPMI and looked at the sensors everything appears okay because they're all green. see attached screenshots from the IPMI. Am I missing something that needs to be done, like moving jumpers on the board or anything? The board has the latest Bios so could it be an issue with the board?


I'm getting the following error code on initial boot/post "pei intel reference code execution b1". I can access the BMC/IPMI and have all green light status on the Sensor Monitoring Dashboard.

Can you please advise as to the nature of the problem with this post error code?

what Xeon 8124 ?
Platinum p-8124 SR2YS ???
IF YES, this is SKL B1 (50653) and do not work because ASRock no support this stepping in BIOS.
it is possible to flash to a modded BIOS, but for that you need a working CPU because modded BIOS can only flashed by Instant Flash function(not IPMI)

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, both processors are SR2YS. So only the 8124M will work on this system board without a modded BIOS.
