Picked up a cheap used Dell PowerEdge R610 server and installed
ESXi 6.7. Runs great. Check out the video at

Is installing vCenter worthwhile for 1 host?

Thanks

I believe you need vcenter to use vm templates as well.
And when you get a second host, it's easy to get it into the environment if you have vcenter :)

Careful with esxi6.7 on Xeon 5600 CPUs. Theyre not officially supported, so even tho you can install it, some future patch might break it.

You'll need vcenter if you want to clone a VM (move, copy etc) easily.

Decided to install vCenter for the added functions mentioned.
6.7 installed fine and seems to work OK. Keen to muck around with nested ESXis, vmotion and HA.

Yes, apparently ESXi 6.7 does not support 65xx and 66xx Xeons, I used a Dell specific version and I probably won’t update.

Oddly enough both 6.7s trials work on vmware workstation.
Maybe something to do will Dell buying vmware.

Cheers

Also grabbed a couple r610's with 5645's and loaded 6.7, and its running great! Have windows 10 pro 64 bit loaded for rendering, will be deploying a freenas vm and a game hosting vm as well. I didn't go for vCenter, im able to manage everything from vSphere client and at the server. What would I be missing out on?

I should note my other R610 has a pair of quad cores in the 55xx range and I had to go down to esxi 6.0 to get it to boot.
