Hello everyone,

What brings me here is a used switch I bought of ebay and is giving me a hard time to boot.

It appears that when the system should become ready to login and running, some errors start to appear on the console:

Someone has experience in this area could help me ?
What should be the steps to fix it?

I can eventually show the complete POST log...

Wonder if it's this known issue... and can be ignored ? I assume it's different but it's the same error code as mentioned in release notes.

The following error may appear in the log “smm_ha_ready(), smm_main.c:2445, build 1: Error code 14004 (item not found) returned”. This error may be safely ignored.

Although the switch doesn't seem to handle those errors very well:
chad_check_restarts: Too many CHAD restarts; fail_count=7, max_num_of_retries=7 CHAD is the Killing system in 2 seconds.

So I assume those cannot all be ignored...

Sorry not much help now, I have never seen anything like that error on my HP branded ones before and i did not see anything else in my collection of notes, manuals, release notes etc.
Hope somebody else has an idea.

Taking a closer look at it, it looks like a simple problem with the IPs of the mgmt network.
Unfortunately I cannot access the cli to clean the configs :x
And the switch is not dealing well with it and reboots.

Also, I have no idea if this switch has any GW licence, and/or if I need some special license to install MLNX-OS.

Looks like first line indicates a wrong configuration being saved in the current config
"configure IP 10.22.100.253/24 to proxy-arp interface - conflicts with IP 10.22.100.90/24 of interface mgmt0"

You might want to reset to default before it reboots - looks like you have a couple of mins?
Or login to the web interface and adjust the proxy arp setting if you have access.

It looks like I am not able to login.
After the login prompt appears, I try to login with admin but nothing happens, only ERR messages.

Do you think a bad console cable is able to show the terminal but unable to send keys?
Or might it be some other reason not allowing me to login?

What about the webgui?
And theoretically it might be a bad cable or bad terminal settings

You could try CTRL-B earlier to see whether it takes any commands

I tried Ctrl+B but nothing happened. Its as if putty didn't send anything.
The same when I give admin and press enter. Looks like the username isn't sent.

As to the webgui, it looks like the management interface doesn't really try to connect to the network. Nothing is asked to the DHCP, and no packets are sent via the mgmt interface.

I might try tomorrow to make a new RJ45 end to the serial cable. Perhaps TX cables are misplaced, compared to a cisco cable?

well the mgmt ip is set, so no dhcp. but it should send some arp packages to a switch...
And I dont think its a special cable, mine just worked. But you might be able to get the pinout from mellanox

It looks like the console is working OK.

When I choose boot options I get this:
Code:
Mellanox MLNX-OS Boot Menu:

*  1: SX_PPC_M460EX SX_3.4.0012 2014-12-15 23:27:42 ppc
   2: SX_PPC_M460EX SX_3.4.0012 2014-12-15 23:27:42 ppc
u: USB menu (if USB device connected) (password required)
   c: Command prompt (password required)

   Choice:
But the two first options load the same config.
For USB I guess it would be a OS upgrade, which I don't have. (License needed? Or perhaps could I try to load a new OS on the top of this one?)
The last option asks me for a password that I have no idea which it is.

Also, when I try to login with admin, I get this:
Code:
Mellanox MLNX-OS Switch Management

Techex-GW login: admin
Last login: Fri Apr 25 12:56:44 on ttyS0

Mellanox Switch
Apr 25 13:07:27 Techex-GW cli[4786]: [cli.ERR]: user admin: cli_cluster_cmds_init(), cli_cluster_cmds.c:205, build 1: failed getting /cluster/config/enable
    System is initializing!
This may take a few minutes

    Modules are being configured
But it never gets to the actual terminal, I guess due to the chad errors...

Hm maybe you can access USB or command prompt if you reset the password (15s press on reset pin if i read that correctly) ?
There is also Login | Mellanox Interconnect Community (
Factory reset? - Mellanox Community)
but I don't have an account so I have no clue whether it has useful info
It appears that 15s press on reset button only resets the admin password, and not that command prompt password.
Perhaps its something for mellanox access, and not for end user.

I cannot access that. Even with account...
I'm tempted to spend on a 1 year support license so that I can have the switch working =(

Well you always could complain to the seller that its not usable ... Unless you got it 'as is' or really cheap o/c
Did the 'reset firmware' link not provide any insights? That account should be free to create (i think) if you have not checked it yet

Let's say I got it really cheap but it should still be working =/
I complained to the seller but since it's an international I'm already loosing money from customs and such.

I logged in to the link, but I get an:
"This place or content does not exist or access to it is restricted. If you think this is a mistake, please contact your administrator or the person who directed you here."

This really looks like a software issue, but I'm afraid to purchase the 1 year support in case it won't allow me to fix the product =(

Where did you get it from I i might ask? And what was really cheap?;)

I am pretty sure there must be a way to reset the switch to its factory defaults, you just need to find it.
If you had access to a firmware file you could try that but I believe that needs a support contract - how much is that btw?

I got it from an eBay seller.
From really cheap let's just say its between 0.5 and 1k.
And the support contract is a bit over 0.6k.

I guess that even for the firmware upgrade I would need the command prompt password.

It's really sad that one can only reset the admin password with the reset button, and the configs in the command line. Now if I have no access to command line, GoodGame! :x
