I feel like high clock 6 core is a great windows desktop machine, but i have a hard time getting over the recycled 1151 socket which isnt backwards compatible that intel used on these coffee lake cpus.

Well...the rumor is that the new Z370 boards might be setup to take 8 core CPU's :)
but how much with that 8 core cost? $500+ . This reminds me of how NVidia also jack up their mainstream card that used to be around $200 or slightly less to close to $300 now..

Even newegg is following the law of supply and demand... 8700k intel msrp is $360... newegg had them on initially for I think $370 or 380 and was constantly sold out so now they jack up price to 420 and still sold out.. guess if only more people knows about the xeon bargains.... lol.... 8700k at $420 is def way overpriced... and not worth it...

not uncommon. All the optane 900P if you can find one are priced over msrp. Whats really annoying is when an item is still selling over msrp 1-2 years after release. At that point the listed manufacturer price is just a lie because they didnt make or sell enough to get the price down to their original estimate. Even newegg with low supply items price over list price. ASUS HYPER M.2 x16 is also mostly selling over list since release.

And seriously, stop it with the Xeon X5600s. At this point they're just inefficient space heaters.

Not to defend the whole x5600's vs 8700k, because that is silly, but the Dell R710 is possibly the most recommended server for those starting their own homelab.

They maybe power hungry, but they do offer something you can hardly match else where. For $599 you can get two x5670's, 128GBs of RAM, with four junk HDD's. (Dell PowerEdge R710 2.5" Server, 2x 2.93GHz X5670 6 Core, 128GB 4x 450GB 2x RPS | eBay) That's almost the same price as an 8700k by itself.

If you're looking to start a homelab, they really are an incredible bang for the buck. If you're looking to play games and use Windows for what ever, get yourself a fast 4/6 core desktop CPU.
