This System / Motherboard might be the most sensitive piece of IT Equipment I ever owned.
Probably the PCIe Link Negotiation (no matter if PCIe Link Training is set to
1-Step or
2-Step), on some Systems, it just refuses to Boot normally up to 10 Times (I didn't try more - yet).
Worth noting, especially for those that might have attempted to flash TYAN BIOS or replace the BMC Firmware with stock TYAN BMC Firmware, since this is also the first Time I noticed this kind of behaviour.
In my Case the Issues began (well, it was not easy to boot to begin with on this System, but after 3-4x it would) after I formatted an Intel SSD DC P4511 2.0TB NVMe M.2 to LBA Format 4096 (instead of 512 Bytes). Did a NVMe Reset, recreated Partitions and LUKS/
mdadm Devices,
zfs send | zfs receive the usual Stuff, the rebooted.
Then nothing. And for the first Time IIRC, the Fans spun down. KVM Screen Black. That already happened quite a few Times, but when the System is stuck, usually the Fans would stay at super noisy Speeds.
This Time, I tried going to SOL Console (Serial over LAN Console) instead of KVM and sure enough, I was at a BIOS Screen (Fallback video Output instead of ASPEED AST2500 KVM or VGA). After another reboot I would end up at the UEFI Shell. In the early boot Sequence you can see a Black Screen in the SOL Console with some Numbers in the bottom Right Corner rapididly Changing (BIOS POST Code). Maybe it also happens when the Fans are stuck at full Speed or in the early Boot Sequence.
So if the System seems stuck and KVM is always black, might be worth to try to go to SOL Console (Serial over LAN Console) instead of KVM. You will probably need to type something to activate it (ENTER, SPACE, ...) and it's definitively not pretty.
My NVMe Drives after LBA Formatting are:
- Not Visible under
Boot Menu
- Not Visible under
Advanced -> NVMe Drives Menu
- Visible under
Advanced -> INTEL SSDPELKX020TB ... Menu (I can read Serial Number, Capacity, ...)
Any Idea ?
