Hi Hive Mind,

So in recent versions of hyper-v, we all know we need to use SET switches.

One of the serious limitations of the SET switch is no support for LACP to uplink to external switches.

Why is this a limitation?

I have seen several cases where a switch has failed at the software level where it stops processing packets (it crashes) but the network links stay up.

This results in all traffic sent to this switch disspearing into the ether.

If this switch was connected via LACP this would not be an issue as the LACP link is negotiated and if the switch stops responding, then the keep alive process stops and the partner will see this link as down. In this case of course this would be a switch that is configured either in a stack or as an MCLAG with another switch.

(In Vmware we also had something called becon probing that was able to detect failed switch ports)

So my question is - does anyone know of a supported way to do LACP uplinks to the external switches in Hyper-V ?

The old school network teaming that you configure with Server Mananger (LBFO) DOES support LACP but this is to my understanding no longer supported in hyper-v, although I understand there is a registry key you can set to make hyper-v use LBFO.

Thank you all.

M.

Umm the whole point of a forum discussion like this is to discuss an issue and come to an answer so it is then visisble to others who are looking for it.

Just saying you dont understand and saying read up isnt really helping.

Can you explain why I dont understand and point me at the documentation that explains it ?

There’s nothing to discuss. LACP has been deprecated as far as HyperV is concerned, and SET is much better than it anyway. As to why…requires reading up.

Microsoft and the interwebs have reams of documentation about this.
