Looking to build a Hyper-V workstation that could handle:
a domain controller (2Gb ram)
Primary site and sql server (24GB)
2 window 7 machines (2gb ram)

I'm needing help on the cpu, motherboard, and ram selection. Trying to stay under $550 for the before mentioned. I'm all for buying parts from ebay and putting it together myself.
I'm I barking up the wrong tree with looking for a xeon, or would an AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core be more than enough?

For some reason I thought you were trying to build 7x nodes for $550.

So you'll need 32GB RAM total + base OS so maybe 48-64GB RAM?

Do you need IOMMU or any other virtualization features?

I'd suggest not AMD at this point. Their tech is tool old on the CPU side.

64GB the easiest is to get a Xeon E5-2600 in 8x8 configuration. You should be able to get 8GB DDR3 for $25 ea if you look. That leaves $350 for the system.

I'm not going to say impossible but... then there's the FS/ FT forums here to the rescue: https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...t-1356-combos-11x-600gb-sas-15k7-drives.7307/

Dual Xeons with MB and coolers for $225. You can do 6x 8GB for $150 for 48GB and that's $375 total.

$175 should get you a case an a cheapo drive or more RAM (you will want more RAM).

Thanks Jeggs,
I've been looking at the E5-2670 xeon since it's down in price. Also been looking at Z9PA-U8 - Overview as a motherboard. Just can't figure out if it will take a FCLGA2011 2670 or not. Any thoughts?

@SCCMguy

Is this setup for production or home lab?
Who is paying for the bill? Business or personal ?
Home lab / personal
The heaviest VM I would have is the primary/SQL server with 16 gb of ram. But would like to be able to spin up 4 or 5 other machines with 4 gb of ram a piece.

Check out TTYpe85 forsale post in this forum.

I have a similar SCCM lab running on a dual E5-2450 48gb memory, utilizing Hyper-v dynamic memory, 10-12 Windows 2012r2 vm fit comfortably in 32gb memory.
