Found these HP X1600's on ebay priced too low to be right. Lower than "configure to order" DL180 G6s - yet its a better version of the DL180. Makes a really nice storage server with 12LFF bays & two rear SFF bays for OS, etc. As configured comes with dual 750w PSUs, single X5520, P212 raid and 6GB ram (3x2GB). Unlike the 14 LFF bay DL180 G6 the X1600 has a free PCIe slot for a 10Gbe or IB card.

Four more available:

I assumed that would be classed as 'freight forwarder' but its worth a try. I do have some friends down south that I can PayPal the shipping costs and enough for them to have a nice dinner that help me out every now and then. I wouldn't mind a pair of these...

Hmm, Would this be a good fit to replace my unRaid server? It's a VM in an E3-1220 now, would like to give it it's own box and put more high power things on the E3.
Edit: I'm only using 12 drives for unRaid now (1 parity, 1 cache, 10 data)

It would make an excellent server for almost any storage application - Unraid, ZFS or Windows Storage Server. You'l probably need to replace the P212 Raid card with an HBA - something like an LSI9211 or one of its OEM equivalents that are cheap on ebay.

Thanks, the 212 would mask the drives from unRaid, right?
I've got M1015s in IT mode ATM, looks like the X1600 would support.
Any idea how loud these are? I've got a C1100 under the desk and it's quiet enough under 75% load.

My DL180 G6 is the about the loudest host I've got (the 45 bay JBOD things just about beat it). Its pretty quiet as long as you don't put any riser cards in. Whether that is the same experience with this host; no idea :)

Make sure you fix the "customs brokerage fees" first. They can be a killer. :).

Thanks Ecosse, I'll see how it goes, I have about 3U of space between the wall and my desk, I'll drop it in and see how it goes.

Well, got it in, not very happy. No drive trays (10 blanks for the 12 LFF openings on the front, nothing for the 2 SFF openings on the back) and the iLO2 module isn't present. Haven't tried firing it up yet, but the unboxing was rather disappointing...

The trays part is a bit disappointing - though to be fair the listing was silent about trays being included or excluded. The photo certainly did look like there were trays - but then again it was obviously an HP stock photo.

The iLO2 module isn't present is curious. The MB for the X1600 doesn't have a separate module for the iLO2. This isn't the "regular" DL180 G6 MB, which has a LO100 module plugged into it. For the Serverworks motherboard the iLO2 is actually integrated onto the board. Is the IPMI Ethernet port present? Have you fired it up to confirm no iLO2 or is this just from a physical look on unboxing?

I still haven't fired it up, but the response from the seller was that the iLO is an option that doesn't come with this server which, of course, isn't what all of the HP literature I've read says. Everything I've read has it as an option on the standard DL180 G6 motherboard.

An option? Curious. That's not at all what the eBay listing said or implied either. iLO2 is mentioned several times on the listing and - unlike the disk drives where were clearly noted as missing - nothing was said about it not being included.

Yes, and after digging through HP promotional material, it's standard on the x1600G2. I'll put it to the vendor and see what they have to say and, as Ecosse said, this thing is loud.

What part of missing is the ilo2 MGMT port? (ilo2 on the lower mgmt placement, LO100 on the higher plugged placement). only Lo100 is removable.

There is a lug in the lower port on mine, the knockout is removed and all that's visible from the outside is a lug.

Yeah, waiting for Monday to see what the response is but I don't like the way it's gone so far...
