I want to fool around with 10G networking, so I've been looking for cheap 10G adapters with the lowest possible power consumption. So far the cheapest ones I've found were the HP 530SFP+ and HP NC550SFP. I've read some random posts saying these HP adapters are a nightmare outside of HP servers. Does anyone here have any experience with any of these, can they be flashed with "generic" firmware? Are they any good or should I look for something else?

If the card work fine I'll use it to connect two proxmox servers and a desktop computer.

NC550SFP is an Emulex OneConnect OCe10102 in sheep clothing. HP and Dell specs put it as max 14.8W usage which is on the high side.
Are you planning to run this box 24/7?

Yikes! 14.8W seems a bit high, would need more cooling. Yes, I plan on having the proxmox servers 24/7 but bot the desktop.

Looking around I found Connectx-3 cards for less than $40 and power consumption is 3 and 6W. From what I've read it is well supported under Linux.
