OK here's the link: HP ProLiant S6500 Enclosure Chassis + Bare SL230s G8 Gen8 Nodes Fans + Rail Kit

If you've been buying or were thinking of getting those open compute servers, I think these have a case to be made.

8 nodes in 4U for $600 and says free UPS 2 day shipping.

That is $75 per node and these look like they take E5 V1 and V2 processors.

That's $2580 without BO's for 8x nodes:
  • 8 core/ 16 thread (e5-2670)
  • 64GB RAM
  • 2x 1Gb, 1x SFP+
  • iLO 4 - no idea of the status

And you have many expansion options for new CPUs and RAM. Looks like these support V2 chips as well so they aren't just V1's like the Dell C6220. Heck, you could throw 2 of those $100 4TB SATA drives in there and have an 8 node cluster with 64TB of storage, 512GB RAM, 64 cores/ 128 threads all in 4U and for $4000. Double the RAM and CPUs is easy.

I'm thinking about getting one or two and setting it up diskless with single CPUs. Then when the V2's flood the market putting the 8 CPUs in 4 nodes and getting 8x V2's.

Looks also like that no heatsinks are included...

Edit: And also the power supply seems to be not included

@sthsep - you might be right on the power supplies but I think it has heatsinks (HP ZHTSK SL230s Gen8 CPU 738022-001/00 and 738023-001/00)

On the power supplies, I think this uses HP common slot power supplies. I think you'd need 2x of HP 660185-001 1200W Hot Plug Power Supply for HP GEN 8 643956-201 656364-B21 or maybe 3x for redundancy

Still, those look easy to find even adding $150 for 3x 80+ plat PSUs is not bad. I think those will also work on 120V unlike the C6220's.

According to HP PartSurfer the heatsink got a different part number (667174-B21) so I think it is not included. To get 16 Heatsinks could be quit pricey.

Lol. Suddenly I'm not so interested. Even for just another andrew. Funny how that works.

Why wouldn't they just include the rails. It would probably cost them more to sell each separately. But I guess they've done the numbers.

Yea - on the other hand, even at $699 still under $100 per node. Since I am spending over $120 per chassis/ PSU already for these 2C Xeon D nodes, that pricing seems inexpensive overall.

I grabbed one of these, couldn't resist.

I've been trying to find out from the seller if they come with psus, iLO, and if rails are the only difference between the two listings but no response on ebay or phone.

can't...buy...another...no.....

Guess I'm in for one. It's better than any deal on a C6220, C6100, or Intel 4-node we'll find for a long time.

What I'll be really interested in finding out is if this actually comes via UPS, there's no way this isn't shipped via freight.

Only 4U. 4U was about the biggest server I could fit in my old Cayman S (without box).

Has anyone decided for sure if these come with the heat sinks? I don't know what else those 2 line items could be:

738023-001/00

HP ZHTSK SL230s Gen8 CPU 1

738022-001/00

HP ZHTSK SL230s Gen8 CPU 2

But the seller does have heat sinks listed separately. Also, they jacked the price up $100.

But it weighs a lot when all the sleds are in it doesn't it? And the S6500 chassis is nearly breaking the limits in terms of length. It's nearly 220 lb when fully loaded. Theserverstore sells fully loaded S6500 chassis with different sleds but they ship via freight.
