Long time lurker, first time poster!

Just wondering if anyone has experience with the HP P420i RAID card in HBA mode being unable to boot?

I've put the P420i into HBA mode fine, Ubuntu can see the disks fine and installs with no problems - but the OS won't load after installing.

Is this normal behavior for a P420i in HBA mode?

That sucks :(

Oh well, may have to use the hardware RAID10 - performance with 6x SSDs can't be that bad, I guess?

My advice. I have a number of 380s.
Buy one of these https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-advanced-solution-Controller-Expansion/dp/B07JKH5VTL/
For 18$. And then Stick a couple of 30$ sata m.2 drives in and mirror them as your boot.
Once Linux is booted you can then use the HBA.
Interesting that you mention this - I have a PCIe NVMe SSD (Samsung 970 Pro) that I placed into one of the 16x slots via an adapter, and it didn't want to boot from that either. I'm guessing the DL380 doesn't like the NVMe stuff, but will boot with a SATA M.2 SSD?
