is this drive worth replacing a Samsung SM951 m2 drive in a laptop? Currently i have two 512GB drives in raid config. would like to get 1TB drive and break the raid up so i end up with 1TB, 512GB and 1TB SSD in the laptop.

if you have two drives in one laptop might be worth it to consolidate into 1 and save a little battery but i mean it's not that much power since most of the time these things are idle anyway....

I'm wondering if PM953 could be a better choice, expecially for zil, and vm storage.
On ebay can be found for similar price or less (but the health/remaining lifespan is often unknown).

The spec of the samsung 960gb listed appears worse than the HP.
That’s the problem though one is pure consumer the other enterprise, so steady state specs mean something different. Probably had to know unless somebody has given your specific workload a test.

A SSD isn't where I'd follow that model. They pretty much only get cheaper with time, so if you don't need it now...
Well it’s true SSD prices are falling now was certainly a case of 2 years ago buying was good then prices went up a lot got 18+ months

But right now I think prices are going to be stable or keep falling for a while.

There are a few now and then. You have the Samsung SM961, and PM983, though they are not as performant.

But I found this
Micron 5100 PRO 960GB SATA 6Gb/s M.2 (22x80) Form Factor Solid State Drive SSD | eBay
The HP drive is not performant, except in Q1 4k burst, it is worse by far in sustained and latency testing.
PM981s can be had cheaply all the time. Granted the capacity/price will always be better on lesser drives.

So the price/performance is definitely in this drives favor, but performance is not.
I did pick up a WD Black 512gb for $100 awhile back... that is a new contender for desktop drive performance.

The enterprise variants tend to have a bit lower advertised specs, but they will hit them consistently and have higher write endurance. Not all applications need high endurance but you should be aware of it. My SM951 ahci is just now starting to show wear in my vr/lan rig.
