About a year ago I decided to build a 2.5 Gbe micro form factor homelab using two identical HP Elitedesk 800 G6 mini's and a Mikrotik CRS310-8g+2s+in. Both HPs have the i225 Flex IO NIC installed, as featured in the STH Youtube video I saw. I have a router-on-a-stick topology, with one HP serving as my OPNsense router, and my second as a Proxmox host for my virtual machines.
Everything is functional, however I've been facing a glaring issue with respect to inter-vlan routing in OPNsense. I get bottlenecking to around 550-600 Mb/s. I have narrowed the bottleneck to OPNsense, after spending months testing both Proxmox and the Mikrotik.
I image the issue arises from the igc driver on FreeBSD. I've seen other posts about i225 issues on this forum, Reddit, and the OPNsense forums. Is there anyone else out there in my predicament who's running OPNSense in a similar topology on the same hardware and experiencing this issue?
