I’ve got a HP EliteDesk 800 G4 with a i5-8500 running Proxmox VE 8.4

I keep having issues where the machine wont boot into the OS. Sometimes I’m getting a POST bleep error indidicating there’s a display failure / graphics card error / video card memory issue.

The machine’s main purpose is a NAS, running TrueNAS as a VM in Proxmox with the drive controller as pass through.

I’ve got 2x 10tb drive’s connected via SATA. There’s a NVMe drive with the Proxmox OS installed on it and where the VMs run. I also have an WD SSD 500gb drive attached to the SATA that would have been for the Disc Drive. This is used for a faster storage pool in TrueNAS and run TrueNAS apps from it like Syncthing and Tailscale.

I’ve found that removing the 500GB SSD drive has allow the machine to boot usually without any issues, but occasionally the machine will not boot into the OS.

Even with the 500GB removed, occasionally I’ll disconnect and reconnect the HDDs and reseat the RAM modules and then suddenly it’ll boot like there wasn’t a problem at all.

I’ve tried removing the battery in the CMOS for 10 mins to reset it. And completely resetting the BIOS settings to factory default.s

Not sure what’s going on and how to troubleshoot and fix this one. Am I asking too much of this older machine? Any ideas?
