HP EliteDesk 800 i-5 SFF Chassis with Motherboard 737728-001 & Power supply | eBay

This would make a great base for a pfSense machine if one had a spare LGA 1150 processor and some DDR3 hanging around.

These boards support LGA1150 v3 Xeon chips (tested with an E3-1225 V3) and Haswell refresh CPUs with BIOS >= 2.30.

I already picked up one of these systems, it arrived with BIOS v2.30 (Haswell refresh supported right out of the box.) Updating the BIOS over the network is a snap too: all you need is a DHCP server and an internet connection.

ECC memory isn't officially supported but reportedly unbuffered ECC works fine.

Xeons are usually supported on Q87 Motherboards but you have to try it.

ECC memory is not supported.

You will want a Xeon with integrated GPU unless you plan to use low profile standalone card.
Also check if Haswell Refresh CPUs are supported - BIOS update was needed for this. Not sure if HP released something.

Yeah, it looks like they are with a BIOS update.
Version: 2.30 Rev.A

Fixed in this release: - Updated graphics Firmware
- Updated PXE ROM to fix some network compatibility issues
- Added fixes for Remote Manageability
- Added Intel Reference code updates for chipset, memory and CPU to support introduction of Haswell Refresh Processors

Few days ago, purchased 4 x for total included shipping $76.34 - 10% ebay bucks . Seller ran a special price sale.
4 machines $76 - $23 discount
Shipping $19.45
Sales tax: $4.09
Buy 1 , get the second one 61% off , shipping was reasonable up to 4 machines, then shipping cost jump.

I run baremetal K8s cluster on these machines.

ECC UDIMM worked in HP 800 G1, I have over 12 HP 800 G1.

It usually goes for between $80 to $120 ( depend on shipping cost ) with a I5 CPU and 4-8gb ram.
It is very quiet, consumes about 14-15w with Ubuntu os idle.

Do you know if the board supports Xeon processors as well? I was hoping to take advantage of some virtualization features that are gated behind i7 or xeon skus.

Did not tried it with Xeon.
With regular I5-4xxx without K , VT-X and VT-D are both enable in BIOS.
I have not try VT-D in real life.

Yeah, my concern is ARIFwd on the PCIe root port -- I'm looking for compatible hardware for a low wattage virtualization project using SR-IOV.

My understanding is that i7 and xeon SKUs support it, I'm fairly certain my Haswell refresh i5 doesn't.

Here's the lspci for the EliteDesk 800G1 - ARIFwd looks present but disabled (ARIFwd- on the PCIe root complex).
Thanks, which chip is in that machine -- an i5?

I think the DevCap2 line indicates capability and DevCtl2 indicates current status.

You can check it from Windows:

wmic MEMORYCHIP get DataWidth,TotalWidth
and
wmic memphysical get memoryerrorcorrection

OR from Linux:

dmidecode -t 17

ECC Supported doesn't mean, that ECC is enabled. ECC is not supported on desktop Intel chipsets (like Q87).

Check this out:
HP Z220 SFF Workstation Base - No Processor - No Memory - No Disk Drive - NO COA | eBay

Somewhat more expensive and a generation older, but this has entry server chipset C216. Guaranteed Xeon E3 and ECC support.
I should have one of these coming in soon.
Nice deal but read z220 specs , in it’s specs it say“In the PCIe Gen3 x16 slot, if it is not being used for a graphics card, only cards certified as After Market Options for this platform are supported.”
this mean z220 pcie x16 has a whitelist or not? This Confusing me

One of these 800 G1s arrived last week, and an E3 v3 today. These definitely support E3 v3 chips, no issue with compatibility at all. The motherboard arrived with BIOS v2.30 so it had Haswell refresh support out of the box -- I wouldn't count on all units having this, who knows how updated any given machine is.

BIOS update is trivial: network update from HP's site works great, you just need a DHCP server and the BIOS takes care of the rest.

Which machine are you referring to?

HP 800 G1 or HP Z220?
HP 800 G1, I dropped $90 on a v3 xeon w/ igpu last week to test the barebones chassis.

The Z220 would have been an LGA1155 v2 chip IIRC

$90 for a v3 xeon with igpu is pretty good price.

My 4 HP 800 G1 came, all 4 in good shape, low mileage, I install 4 x I5-4570, all 4 machines fire up first try.
