I have a question about the HP DL 160G6 servers.

Does it have any issues with upgrading the CPU in there? Can I use any compatible Xeon CPU or do I have to get the HP ones?

You should be fine. You just want to ensure you are not using the engineering sample/ "ES" processors.

Thanks, besides having to use HP branded cards are there any other gotchas that I should be aware of with this platform?

Sometimes HP supplies a different heatsink based on the CPU. I would be concerned your system was supplied with a heatsink only suited to a small (60W)TDP. If you install a 130W CPU, it may be an issue. also with the 130W CPU you usually need the full set of fans. Also, HP sometimes supplied a power regulator module with a CPU. They are not always identical between CPU's.

Frankly, all of my experience is with other HP boxes, and I would not be surprised if it does not apply to the model you have, but I would check it out.

PS according the the quick specs, some chassis do not support all the CPU kits, so check that out as well

Also, some CPU kits do not support the backplane. This leads me to believe that the reason might be because the high END CPU's require a swap to a much larger heatsink.

There is two types of motherboard for DL160G6:
511805-001 for Xeon5500 series
608882-001 for Xeon5600/5500 series
please see labels on the motherboard to identify.

I dont recall why (if any) hp would have a 5500 and 55/5600 board... Then again they dont share current firmware...

Also, my Dell laptop Is also artificially limited to PC3-1333, but Intel claims that I7 will do 1600...

I'm sticking to supermicro for internal servers....

The 5500 boards were mostly pulled due to instability, but you might be able to find one off ebay. I have not, my DL160 G6 has had a E5620 and L5639 in it and is quite happy. Both are not high powered cpu's so the default heatsink that I paid $10 on ebay for the HP DL160 G6 specific part worked fine! just be sure to use proper heatsink goop material!
