Ive got an opportunity to buy a bunch of "as-is" Dell sas drives that are advertised as "locked" with no further detail. Im wondering if they might just be formatted with a different sector size.

Drive label. Doesnt appear to be a SED or FDE drive,

Any thoughts?
they are sed. look at the the key code under thailand. but you can use sed unlocker in parted magic if they are locked usually. or a sas3 lsi raid card will unlock

any lsi 6gb that supports 4k drives will work. here are a few i know work. the first 2 are minimum cards for lsi. older cards than this wont support 4k and wont show the drive properly
9210-8i -needs latest firm
9211-8i -needs latest firm
3008 cards (these are 12gb sas but are backwards compatible) - any firmware

as long as in IT mode they will work.

1.47 said missing files or something. cyg problem i stopped troubleshooting as 1.46 works fine without using cyg
Thanks. Reason I ask is I have a 4TB Toshiba HD that gets to 1.46% then stalls. Thought this might be a Windows problem but I guess not. The seller sent my an exact replacement and sg_utils had no problem formatting it. HD Sentinel says the stalling Hd is 100% healthy.

But the cable for hba cant install in r740 sas interface
it should . the front expander should connect direct right into that card with the hdsas cable. if you mean the cable in that picture you shared? yes that wont connect direct in a dell server. the dell 740 has an expander so it needs the
Mini SAS HD SFF-8643 to
Mini SAS HD SFF-8643

cable

is the dell pn. notice the elbow on the one end.

if you also could go this route and use sata power adapters, but your dell server wont have many sata molex power readily available.

Thought I was registered here but confused it with a sort of similar/named forum :) turns out I was not despite being lurking for a long time.

Registered now to say a thanks for this thread, was picking up some 2TB NetAPP drives from mate at work as they were clearing out a few of the shelves they were SATA drives. As I was browsing through the 240 drives that were going to be crushed! Found Toshiba MG04SCA60EE, 6TB SAS drives, been wasting time with reformatting under LSI Option bios on HP Z840, which did nothing.

Thanks to this thread now have 4 drives happily reformatting at once in the Z840, very pleased as I have 28 of them, seem to be going much quicker than the 21 hours it took one to be formatted under the LSI rom, which as it turns out did not work.
