Hi,

I have several used enterprise SAS SSDs that I want to use to create a new pool on an OmniOS storage server.

What is the best method to prepare used drives? Write zeroes? Some 'format' command?

Should I use Napp-IT's option "Disks -> Initialize"?

Additionally, I also have a used SLOG. How should I prepare it? (32GB Optane)

All of this is currently in use, but it has gotten very slow, especially sync writes.

Thanks in advance,

G

If you want to test the disks prior use, check smartvalues (current napp-it give warnings on critical smartvalues) and do a intensive disk test with a manufacturer tool ex wd data lifeguard. Disk initialize does not do a test as well as a format or write zero.

If smart is ok, you can just use them with a good ZFS redundancy ex Z2. As long as there is no ZFS error you can use them. ZFS can detect all errors when they happen. If an Slog fails, logging just reverts to onpool logging (ZIL).
