Antivirus is useless, but up to date secure software is not. Question is, if you use a large GUI program specialized for email, how do you trust it? Those things don't have a good record.
I don't use gmail as my primary email, but I have a gmail account that I forward things to that are not comfortable for reading in my usual mailer. Gmail will handle many of the threats. And you use gmail in a program that you can trust relatively far, your web browser.
Alternatively, use something like mutt, maybe on a raspberry pi.
