Quick question: I have a Supermicro X9 series motherboard, and in bios there is a setting for hotplug on or off for each sata port. I use standard sata drives connected to these onboard sata ports through normal cables (not a special backplane or anything).

Should I feel free to disconnect a hard drive and connect another one -- hot swap them -- provided that the outgoing one had been unmounted/detached/exported as far as the OS is concerned? Is it best to pull the sata before the power or does it matter at all?

The OS in this case is OpenIndiana.

Thanks.

You should be able to pull them. Do be careful. Do not want to pull a disk mid-write - jolt the disk - and have head dig into the platter.
