While the price is good and I even have enough bays (now)...

IMG_0243.JPG

I just can't bring myself to "waste" a bay on just a 3TB drive (How sad is that. Even 2-3 years ago, I'd have jumped on 3TB drives in a heartbeat). I have about 100TB right now, almost all in 8TB drives and what I've learned from that is, higher capacity drives rule. The premium is worth it, and if there's ever and amazing deal on them, I just stock up.

3-4TB drives...hmm...not worth it (in my case).

In the middle of a major expansion. Had a single 24 bay chassis previously, which was housing a combination of spinners and SSDs (has the "A" backplane). One of these 846 chassis is for SSDs for now until I get a dedicated chassis for them. The other two are for spinners. I added the second and third chassis only recently.

The 2U 12 bay chassis at the top is daisy chained off of an expander and is mainly used for drive testing and burn in.

Lol... 8x opteron 8220 is 16 core at 2.8 ghz with no hyperthread... so its probably no faster than dual 2670v1 or dual 2650 v2? Sure will be a good heater for the room this winter though..

Not quite if the controller in that box will take these 3tb hdd though
How about this model instead:

Sun Fire X4270 M2 Server Intel Xeon X5675 3.07 GHz 16 GB RAM NO HDD Local Pickup | eBay

Sun 2U 12 Bay X4270 M2 FREENAS JBOD Xeon 8 Core 2.53Ghz 400GB PCI-e SSD Server | eBay

Maybe someone should be the guinea pig and startup a new thread on this beast!

Thanks for reporting back. By normal reasoning those drives should work with the LSI 2008 HBA since SUN is also using the LSI 2008 in their servers, unless they lock the drive firmware to their custom LSI 2008 firmware.

I have 4 of the SUN Oracle 3TB SAS 7.2K 3.5" HDD 7010036 7021037 FOR SUN UNITS ONLY, and they are working perfectly with a $40 HP H220 SAS card (650933-B21), that I flashed to LSI F20 firmware :D

I have the H220 installed on an X9SRL-F, passed through from ESXi 6.7U1 to an Xpenology NAS running v6.2.
All good so far :)

I connected one to LSI 9300-8i and it works fine. Have some more in the box.
