Trying to clear it from the device tab gave errors. Some googling led me to ssh'ing and partedUtil. But now I'm only seeing 350GB of free storage on the p3605 instead of 1.5TB.
You probably cleared only one of the partitions...

I am not liking this at all. Back at ssh:

The HGST names (the HD's) are the same as the P3605 name - Intel.

I'm putting my hands folded in my lap until I get a consensus on how to proceed with this mess I've created.

I am the very reason why ssh comes disabled by default.

Ok, that partedUtil output looks good.

Now what happens if your try to create a datastore on that device?

Failed to create VMFS datastore..... see VMkernel log....

The kernel log looks useless to me:

Can you run:

partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/ t10.NVMe____INTEL_SSDPEDME016T4S____________________CVMD625300CC1P6NGN__00000001

But you used the p3605 in proxmox? I remember I had a similar problem your experiencing (used a zfs disk from freenas) and I had to load the disk back in freenas and format there.

I had the p3605 inserted in a PCIE slot when I used Proxmox. I never accessed it. Didn’t even know for sure that it worked, other than showing up in a listing of recognized disks.

Perhaps the previous owner had these partitions and a file system in place???

Okay, well you have a VMFS Datastore partition on the drive. Have you checked the datastores to see whether it shows up?

The seller you bought from wipes the drives (from my experience from the two I bought off him). If you did didn't use the p3605 in Promox then its not likely to have been affected.

Yes, there is a 1.46TB VMFS partition on that drive. If I click on that drive under Storage, and select New datastore, I give it a name, click next, and the next screen is to Select partitioning options. I can only select use the entire disk. When I click on Finish I get the error Failed to create VMFS datastore - see vmkernel log, and we're back to where we were a dozen messages ago.

Most search results point to nvme issues with ESXi7 /nvme 1.3 compatibility.
@zack$ Do you run a p3605 on 7 and can confirm its working fine?

I use neither 7 nor p3605's so not much help here
