What OS or hypervisor is the system going to use? That has an impact on the recommendation.

Also - how far is the system going to be from the switch?

you want to get an X2 converter to SFP+, then an SFP+ module and a modern SFP+ nic (emulex oce10102 or emulex oce11102).

This switch is pretty old school so I woudln't expect that much. X2 -> XFP -> SFP+ , so it is like 3 generations old tech wise.

Cisco 10GBASE X2 Modules  [Cisco Transceiver Modules] - Cisco Systems

I was looking at emulex and did not see any single port solutions...that card is nice but $1500 for a card is out of my budget on this project...

sure the switch is older but was free...and still has some power for home use..
