The drives are Seagate ST6000NM0285's underneath the proprietary HP firmware. I'm clear on *how* to update the firmware. My problem is that I cannot FIND the OEM Seagate firmware anywhere.

Seagate Download Finder consistently says there are no firmware updates available (I have tried multiple serial numbers from Seagate branded ST6000NM0285s), so I'm at a loss as to how to obtain the firmware. Any suggestions or does anyone have this firmware package available?

I think I may have figured this out. The nm0285 is the SED-FIPS model. The regular SED equivalent is the NM0195, for which firmware is available. I'm thinking Seagate possibly just holds back the FIPS firmware.

Has anyone ever tried flashing SED firmware onto a FIPS drive (same model series, same capacity)?

Yea, so this is not working. hdparm refuses to download any firmware with a "DOWNLOAD_MICROCODE: not supported by device" and sedutil-cli refuses to PSID revert the drives. At my wits end with these things.

Any suggestions / magic tricks?
