Hey guys

I currently have 3 servers that i am trying to consolidate my resources into.

1u - dual 2670's 64gb ram
4u - Norco 4224 - 22 drives - dual 2670's 64gb ram - imb m1015 with HP sas expander
4u - Norco 4220 - 20 drives - dual L5640's 48gb ram - ibm m1015 with Intel sas expander

I want to pull the board cpu and ram from the 4u's to reduce power usage and have the 1u control everything but will need an hba with external ports (i think) and run a cable from each box. What would the best card for me to get be? or would there be a better solution? Im open to any other ideas. Main goal is to reduce the amount of power my rack is using which currently is around 600 watts.

Running Ubuntu 16.04.2 with ZFS

What are you running on the servers? The drives are least a third of your power draw, turning down the two storage motherboards would save some power the L5640 would save more than the 2670.

Since you have the expanders in the cases already you can do one of these in each case

Then two external sas cables to a hba such as this

The norco 4224 is running Ubuntu with zfs
The norco 4220 is running Unraid
the 1u is running server 2012R2 with hyper v but that was for testing and no longer needed.

The hba is the part im struggling with. The M1015's are solid but i don't want to hack up the 1u case in order to get some sas cables out of it.

Budgets not a huge concern if putting more towards the hba is worth it.

That second like i gave you has external ports so no hacking up case, as long as you have a extra pcie slot.

Just an update. Got the card in and everything moved around. Working fantastic and I was able to drop 250 watts of power. That's a win
