I'm running Microsoft S2D on 5 spinners connected directly to the MOBO, 4TB each and I now have a failing drive. I am also approaching full capacity, so it is upgrade time. (Yes, I also have a backup on an external drive). System is used for Plex, and for recording movies. Compression is handled by a different machine. OS is on a separate SSD.

What do you recommend for an HBA?

I'll be upgrading drives to larger volume size using shucks from WD EasyStore purchases on the existing motherboard and operating system.

Depending on your budget, for just regular HDD I prefer the Dell H310 or equivalent LSI 9211-8i in IT mode (about 30$+-) .
That said you can get a little better performance card for a few dollars more in the LSI SAS 9207-8i, PCIE 3.0 and would work with SSD if needed for throughput purposes (at about $50+-).
