Has anyone tried the new 64GB DDR5 SO-DIMM in Chinese Firewall Boxes?

Hi everyone,

I am asking around if anyone had tried putting the new 64GB DDR5 SO-DIMMs e.g. Crucial Crucial 64GB DDR5-5600 SODIMM | CT64G56C46S5 | Crucial.com in the N100/N305 firewall boxes like Qotom, Topton, Kingnovy etc. and what was the outcome. Please share your experiences - need to buy a new firewall and I am scratching my head about whether to buy a bundle from Aliexpress without knowing what they put inside or buy a barebone.

I put a 32 GB chip (Crucial 4800MHz CL40 CT2K32G48C40S5 )in my HUNSN RJ34 N100 back in 2024. Never felt the need for a 64GB chip. At 32GB my pfSense setup was using less than 4% of the memory.

Yes, true. Currently I run OPNsense on a J1900 box with 4GB and everything is quite good. My plan however with the new box is to install a hypervisor - either a ProxMox or XCP-NG and then deploy more things than just the firewall. That's why I am interested in more memory.

I still think with either of those processors you are not going to need more than 32 gb of RAM. Even if you give pfSense 2 cores and 4GB of RAM. That means you would have 2 or 6 cores left to play with (although you can easily over subscribe cores) and roughly maybe 20 or 22 GB of unused RAM. You could spin up maybe 5 VMs on top of pfSense and Proxmox with say 2 cores and 4 GB of RAM. Because of the limited amount of cores, I just don't see you spinning up VMs with 8 or more GB of RAM. At least that's been my experience, YMMV. I run an N100 box as a pfSense node, and I have it outfitted with 16GB of RAM, and it is enough for what I do (an instance of open media vault, an instance of Debian running Ansible and Terraform, and a couple of test VMs.). The N100 and/or N305 aren't going to blow your doors off when it comes to virtualization. There are better low power CPUs with more PCI lanes that will be better suited to that use case I think.

Something with one of these low TDP CPUs would probably be a better choice for virtualization. I kind of like the Pentium Gold 8505 as it has 20 PCI lanes and you tend to see it in these fanless units a lot.

I am out of choice here, all of these firewall boxes may have either N100, N150, N200, N305 or N355.
N305 is an 8-core processor, no HT, however, yes, only 9 PCIe lanes. This should not be a show-stopper though, as this box is going to be just a small machine to try this and that, not production use, single user experimenting with apps.

I am not any more special than all those people. I had no idea there was that thread. Just came to the forum to ask, the forums are for asking questions and getting answers, is that right?
