I've been wondering what the first item to break in my new stack of hardware would be. I was betting on the 2TB HDDs. They're Seagate, after all, and under a decent load about 25% of the day. Well, it finally happened. Something broke.

Is it the Infiniband switch whose fans I replaced with half-the-CFM fans? Nope.
Is it the aforementioned hard disks? Nope.
Did I blow out a UPS with the frequent brownouts in my area? Nope.
Fry a PSU with the summertime temperatures? Not a chance.
Did buying used finally bite me on the Infiniband cards? Unh-uh.

It was a USB stick I was using for ESXi boot. Gotta say, I'm impressed with how ESXi has handled the failure. There's no VMs on the node, it's still fully functional and responding to all actions... Really you'd never know the thumb drive is dead were it not for a little warning icon on the host.
