Hi there !
I'm new around here. So maybe I'm not posting in the correct section, feel free to move it
I knew your community while growing my interest around FreeNas/TrueNas to replace my old Synology DS1813+ with 20 Tb RAID 6.
My Project/goals:
I want to completely change the hardware/software of my Home NAS to something more robust, scalable. Performance is also on my top priorities.
I host some things (small websites, data sharing, web tools). I virtualize (4 Vms) and dockerize a lot (20 containers). Obviously, my old NAS can't handle all of them
Only a few containers are on the NAS, the rest are on an old server.
My other devices:
I have a SFP+ switch, part of my Pcs and boxes are 10Gb/s equipped. I have a 10 Gb/s internet connection.
Software questions:
I am hesitating between the stability of TrueNas Core and the promises of TrueNas Scale (for virtualization features and docker mostly). I guess that docker is coming to TrueNas core if I get it well ?
I'm really familiar with Linux, a little bite less with freebsd.
I am also concerned with robustness, scalability and performance.
Hardware questions:
This new NAS will have to handle and perform as much data as the actual one.
But I really want more performance out of there (CPU/RAM/IOPS/Throughput/etc.) while being able to dockerize and virtualize on the same system (by now it's done in some of my PCs).
I have read your buyer's guide and top hardware components lists.
So I'm looking for cases, cpu compatibility and advises for my goals and MB. For the rest, I will follow compatibility lists and top components advises.
I was considering Xeon D series, Atom 3000 series, Ryzen, Epyc...well, ok, almost everything out there
"Architecture":
Should I consider installing proxmox/esx and then virtualize TrueNas inside it ? I'm a little bit confuse regarding stability and performance...
Should I install TrueNas and use it has the central point for everything ? My favorite option by now.
I will migrate my actual pool of HDD to the new one to keep data storage.
I will create a new pool of nvmes for virtualization and so one.
Thanks for reading !
And thanks in advance for your advices and comments.
