I think we have seen many reports of very high power consumption using Intel Xeon Platinum parts. Here is a question for you. GROMACS, AVX512 Intel Xeon Silver 4114 in a system with 1x 10Gbase-T link active (C622 based) and a LSI SAS3008 controller (1x Intel 2.5" SATA SSD for storage.)

What do you think the power consumption will be?

Just a few notes here:
  • AVX512 will be the high power consumption workload
  • Code below
  • @Patriot is ineligible to guess since he knows the answer.

Code:
Running on 1 node with total 10 cores, 20 logical cores
Hardware detected:
  CPU info:
    Vendor: Intel
    Brand: Intel(R) Xeon(R) Silver 4114 CPU @ 2.20GHz
SIMD instructions most likely to fit this hardware: AVX_512
SIMD instructions selected at GROMACS compile time: AVX_512

  Hardware topology: Basic

Reading file md.tpr, VERSION 2016.2 (single precision)

Will use 12 particle-particle and 8 PME only ranks
This is a guess, check the performance at the end of the log file
Using 20 MPI threads
Using 1 OpenMP thread per tMPI thread

starting mdrun 'Protein in water'
500000 steps, 1000.0 ps.

Lol, he tagged me but also told me the answer earlier... I shall abstain.

Edit: and he stated that in the first post... (whistles)

I will say 200w
I want to believe @cactus guess is on the very high side... let's see.

I have not looked at the HPE or other OEM PSU requirements yet but maybe they give a hint, certainly you would be surprised what dual CPU would run with 500w psu in e5 v4, hope this won't be making an impact on the 4 x 32amp single phase we use in a rack today (220v)

is this dual cpu or single?
If single, I would guess in the neighborhood of 160w?

Hmm the 4114 downclocks to 1.4Ghz with 10cores used and avx512.
Chipset takes <20W, IPMI and the LSI another 20W together at most.
I don't think it's higher than 150W total, assuming some minimal memory config (4 x 8G DIMMS or similar)

Germany
CPU 90 watts (slightly above TDP), another 10 watts for the board with chipset, 10 watts for RAM, 5 watts for the idle LSI, 3 watts for the mostly idle SSD, 5 watts for the 10G-BaseT link, around 90% efficiency for the PSU so ~ 137 watts total from the wall.

Rather a lot lower than I expected, of course my guess was fearing the worst.

Wonder how that compared to an e5-2540v4 in the same sort of config...
