Few points to highlight: VP9's biggest benefit is its a royalty-free codec, unlike H.264/H.265 there are NO fees to be paid.
VP9 performance measured in SSIM (dB) closely follows more advanced H.265 rather than its predecessor - h.264. While the latter has the benefit of massively widespread hardware and software support, VP9 and H.265 both 50% more bitrate efficient at lower bitrates than legacy H264.
Since VP9 is largely Google's product, as it stands there is relatively little hardware support for it yet. Intel QuickSync started to support it only from Apollo/Kaby/Coffee/Comet Lake CPU series, but I guess not at sufficient amount of streams required by Google, so they had to roll their own accelerator card.
