Do dell servers support non-dell branded hardware (raid controllers, hbas, nics)?

Seems like the posting is inconsistent, it says 96GB (which is 24x4) in the description and then 24GB there. Hmm

50$ worth of ram. procs are ~50-100$ each. I don't really shop for dell stuff, but even at 700$, I wouldn't bite. Now he wants 880?

Thanks for the input. Looks like I'm waiting patiently a little longer for a better deal :)

I put a cheap a$$ consumer sata card into a dell R720 and it did not complain or spool up the fans. The only issue I have read about is that some "unknown" cards may cause the fans to spool up (I am guessing that the system can measure power draw of the PCIe bus and if it detects draw over a certain amount AND does not recognize the card it (i.e. it does not know how much air flow is required to cool it) it will spool up the fans as a precaution to prevent overheating of the component... that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.)

I've been looking for a dual E5-2670 setup. Is this a good deal, average, or ripoff?

Dell PowerEdge R620 Server
2x2.60GHz E5-2670 8-Core
96GB RAM
iDRAC7 + 4 Trays
$704 + $35 shipping
  • The RAID controller on this one (H310) is absolute garbage. You would be better off with H710 or H710P with WBC which once again costs around $180 depending on the condition.
  • You will need to spend more money on drives and Dell PERC controllers are very choosy about the drives being dell certified. Dell certified drives (even used ones) are pretty darn expensive.
  • The chassis only supports 4 drives. I would choose the 8 drive version.
  • Only 1 power supply non-redundant.
If I were you, I would pass. Dell spares and accessories if bought separately, even used on ebay are pretty expensive.
