Well I ended up purchasing the TrendNet TEG-30284 for a couple of reasons. First was it was only 25 watts maximum, and second because the switching capacity was higher in both throughput (128Gbs vs 88Gbs) and pps (96Mpps vs 65Mpps)

For routing I'll end up using a physical PFSense box, but I'll have to decide on a Opteron 4332HE or a Rangeley 2758 for processing.
Just as a short plug...I love my C2758 1U Supermicro. Had a tiny issue with Cox Cable not issuing an IP to the onboard NIC, but once I moved to 1Gb service and PCIE NIC it all went out the window. I'm pushing close to 933Mb consistently and thats including PPPoE overhead and single core performance for PPPoE.

Sooo, Mikrotik is now listing the CSS326-24G-2SplusRM, a 1U L2 Switch running SwitchOS with 2x 10G SFP+ and 24x 1G RJ45, for 139$.
Looks like I know what I will be getting soon.

Still no internal power supply which stinks! hard to have a rackmount switch with a PSU that is mid-cable.

I know its totally internal mental pain, but Mid-cable is gross to me. :) I'd almost prefer they build it into a 1U plate that I can mount below it!

Is the idea to save space or spare the cooling on this model?

If you look at the back picture, it seems you can install your own PSU. A fitting cutout for a C14 socket seems already prepared. Should be enough space for a good one in there.
Plus, you could always go with the passive PoE option instead. Or use both. Really nice, having redundant power on a 140$ switch.

Then again, I'm far more interested in whether the switch is actively or passively cooled. 19W max power suggests it could easily be cooled passively, or at least with a very silent fan, thus making it an interesting option for offices.

The only place I found it online was MikroTik Cloud Smart Switch w/ 24 Gigabit Ports and 2 SFP+ Cages for 121 preorder. 19W and powered by POE makes it an odd creature. So I can power it from my core POE switch to avoid the wall wart but that makes the two 10G ports "local".

Strangely this may work for me as I can put my main and my backup server on the 10G ports for backup and run 1G back to the rest of the house.

This sure looks a more like an under-the-desk port expander than a rack mount core switch. And, 150 bucks puts it in the same price range as other smart managed under-the-desk switches. I have been picking up old model HP1810-8Gs for that purpose primarily because they are smart managed and powered by PoE to eliminate the wall wart in bedrooms that need more than one ethernet port.

Just not enough of these smaller switches with 10G connectivity. Really hope some manufacturers get it together and release some new products that isn't just for the datacenter.
I'm still looking at the Mikrotik CRS210-8G-2S+IN 8x Gigabit Smart Switch 2xSFP+ but with two Mikrotik branded SFP+ transceivers it totals to around $365 USD incl. shipping.

Hopefully 2017 will be the year of mainstream 10G networking.

Can anyone recommend me a low price 10gbe dual port to use with the lb5 switch?

So just browsing around for a new 10gb switch to combine my 1G and 10GB switches and found these offers (Europe)
Zyxel xgs2210-28 - €500
Zyxel xgs1910-24 - €400
Netgear M5300-28G3 (w/ L3) €700
Aruba Networks S3500-48P €550
Aruba S2500-24P €350

I am looking for low power consumption as well as features.
I assume the xgs2210 would be the lowest power one (newest), the Aruba& Netgear are enterprise level and most likely not particularly efficient I assume
Just looking for comments/recommendations (or alternatives) :)

Take a look at the tp-link t1700-28q. 24 port 1G and 4 sfp+. 300GBP so will be about 10eu in the next week or so...
Haven't checked power but assume it's pretty low, the switch is fanless. Multiple vlans over a lag config doesn't work via GUI on mine but does just fine via cli.

Hm I see it for 330 GBP but not bad. So cheaper options are there and no real reason to spring for one of the more expensive ones.

Don't think I *need* L3 - don't run too many vlans. Need a few sfp+ ports for (hopefully) connecting my IB switch and ideally a couple of Base-T ports to connect my 'legacy' 10GB hardware (and o/c at least 20 GbE ports, the more the merrier). But that might prove difficult with the desired low power envelope:p

If you need both base-t and sfp+ 10gb ports then look at the netgear s3300 series switches. They have two of each.

Ah right - thought it had shared ports like the M5300 but those are dedicated, thanks:)

Edit: I assume $500 for Juniper EX2500 is nothing noteworthy anymore?
Saw @PigLover 's 2013 Lab article quoting 2 grands used, but with the LB6M for $200 ...
