A good new for LSI 9361-8i series owner.
Intel RES3FV288 (PMC chipset) is compatible with LSI 9361-8i series
no further configuration need, just connect the RAID controller to RES3FV288 port 7 with SFF-8643 to SFF8643 cable

That's mean - A LSI SAS3 controller + SAS3 EXPANDER is not a dream anymore
Below is the MegaRAID Storage print screen for your inference

PS. suppose 9361-8i + RES3FV288 is working fine, most of the LSi 93xx series HBA and MegaRAID is working fine with Intel RES3 RAID expander also, either RES3FV288 (28 internal, 8 external, MD2) and RES3TV360 (36 internal, backplane)

The RES3FV288 also supports an x8 link from the 9361-8i using both RAID controller ports:

Edit to add:
To get the x8 link, you must connect the two RAID controller ports to the two SAS expander ports furthest from the PCI bracket (identified as CN7 & CN8 on page 7 of the user guide). The two external SFF-8644 ports are also supposed to support a wide link, but I haven't had a chance to try that yet.

Do u have any pics of how u hooked it up and what it looks like in the chassis? did u use a dummy Motherboard or the 40$ board that allows u just to run the controller?

Just am looking to do a similar thing for my ZFS implementation but using a LSI-9300-8E

The RAID controller and SAS expander are both just plugged in to normal PCIe slots, and connected using the two short SFF-8643 cables that came with the RES3FV288.
