yeah, you're running PCIe Gen 1. You should really try to enable PCIe Gen2 using the FreeDOS/editcmos workflow
I succeeded! now I reach these speeds

Code:
   Speedtest by Ookla

Server: Vodafone IT - Milan (id: 4302)
         ISP: Telecom Italia
Idle Latency: 11.34 ms (jitter: 0.81ms, low: 10.90ms, high: 12.19ms)
Download: 2156.85 Mbps (data used: 2.4 GB)
                 37.78 ms (jitter: 33.07ms, low: 9.85ms, high: 335.34ms)
Upload: 1029.52 Mbps (data used: 998.2 MB)
                 23.81 ms (jitter: 1.74ms, low: 10.82ms, high: 36.42ms)
 Packet Loss: 0.0%

Ok, would be interesting to know if the Futro could handle the 2gbps via being the PPPoE Entpoint itself, since PPPoE is not very optimized or offload-able unlike normal ethernet traffic.

I don't use Futro as a router, I can't do the test sorry.

If anyone needs it I have summarized all the steps of the Editcmox procedure at this link

OK now I have a small question to all PROXMOX users on the S920.

I have a setup of a 3-node cluster (all S920) and when I transfer data between the clusters (e.g. via SSH or NFS or CIFS), the speeds are okayish, but when I do a backup via proxmox I get sub-stelar speeeds of around 16-19MiB/s (not dependent whether I save it on a SATA or mSATA device or even USB.
When I back it up to my RasPi 3 with attached USB HDD I get speeds of around 30-40mMiB/s

My assumption is that it is bottlenecked by the CPU.

Here are my test results:

FIO
Code:
fio --ioengine=libaio --direct=1 --name=test --filename=test --bs=4m --iodepth=64 --size=5G --readwrite=write
fio to SMB share: 155MiB/s-155MiB/s
fio to local mSATA: 93.7MiB/s-93.7MiB/s
scp from node1 to node3 internal SSD: 66.7MB/s

iperf2 shows 2.1 and 1.9 GBit/s (in dualtest)
Code:
[ 1] 0.0000-10.0047 sec 2.45 GBytes 2.10 Gbits/sec
[ *2] 0.0000-10.0176 sec 2.23 GBytes 1.91 Gbits/sec
[SUM] 0.0000-10.0074 sec 4.68 GBytes 4.02 Gbits/sec
iperf3 seems to do something different and in bidir test and is kind of asynchronous
Code:
[ ID][Role] Interval Transfer Bitrate Retr
[ 5][TX-C] 0.00-10.00 sec 292 MBytes 245 Mbits/sec 0 sender
[ 5][TX-C] 0.00-10.00 sec 285 MBytes 239 Mbits/sec receiver
[ 7][RX-C] 0.00-10.00 sec 2.62 GBytes 2.25 Gbits/sec 0 sender
[ 7][RX-C] 0.00-10.00 sec 2.62 GBytes 2.25 Gbits/sec receiver
Proxmox Backup to node3 (via SMB): 19MiB/s
Code:
INFO: starting new backup job: vzdump 101 --compress zstd --node node1 --mode snapshot --notes-template '{{guestname}}' --notification-mode auto --storage SMB_USB2TB --remove 0
INFO: Starting Backup of VM 101 (lxc)
INFO: Backup started at 2024-04-18 18:32:58
INFO: status = running
INFO: CT Name: mqtt
INFO: including mount point rootfs ('/') in backup
INFO: backup mode: snapshot
INFO: ionice priority: 7

INFO: creating vzdump archive '/mnt/pve/SMB_USB2TB/dump/vzdump-lxc-101-2024_04_18-18_32_58.tar.zst'
INFO: Total bytes written: 779622400 (744MiB, 19MiB/s)

My assumption is: When doing a proxmox backup it opens a file handle (tar) which will be filled from the sending machine. The problem might be that this file handle is a tar file and the sender needs to tar the VM/LXC which might be the bottle neck for the backup.

I also tested it with a i3-6100T node and this gave me a backup of around 75MiB/s

Any ideas on how to improve this backup process?

Hello everyone,
Shouldn't the EditCMOS.exe workflow to enable PCIe 2.0 on the Futro S920 be EditCMOS.exe SetID:0x01B7=0x151 ?

I've seen it quoted in many places on this forum and in a user's blog as EditCMOS.exe SetID:0x01B7=0x0151, but I got errors when I tried that command. The only time it worked for me was when I used EditCMOS.exe SetID:0x01B7=0x151.

Hello! o) I'm not sure, when I tried to enable PCI-Gen2 mode recently, I was not able to find/download the binaries anymore. o( The only thing that was available and seemingly worked was the GUI based windows BIOS settings tool from Fujitsu. This has an option to be clicked for PCI-Gen2 mode, kind of easy, but it seemed to me, it also sets some other settings, which I wasn't a fan of, since the Futro was using a little bit more power since then. My feeling was, that it's not related to the activated PCI-Gen2 mode, but not sure, because "how to find out?". The BIOS settings tool always sets a bunch of things in one go. If I remember correctly, even after reverting back to PCI-Gen1 mode, the power consumption was higher. We are talking 10%.. not a dealbreaker, but I surely would have preferred to use the DOS tool, to just toggle the single PCI-Gen setting, to not mess with any other setting unnecessarily.

So, I can't really tell or confirm your findings yet, but these HEX code are irritating for sure, I also found the names or IDs for the PCI-Gen setting were different, wrong, not available etc.. I also had problems with these in some way. I was happy to have spotted the option in the GUI tool eventually, but as said, that was not what I wanted to use in the first place.

I would like to try again with the DOS tool, where did you download it? Can you post a working link?
Did you verify the PCI-Gen2 speed?

At least I can tell, using the BIOS GUI tool works, the speed of the NVME drive I connected to the mini PCI slot with an adapter was twice as fast afterwards (and still way below what it was capable of, but that was to be expected o). And I tried all this with the Futro S720, if that makes a difference, I guess it does not.

You make me wonder but I seem to have used this command:
EditCMOS.exe SetID:0x01B7=0x0151

Have you updated to the latest BIOS version?

GM I recently also tried using a PCIe to NVME adapter on the activated PCIe port and it worked. But it added a PCIe device in front of the two NICs which in return changed the network names in proxmox... Duhhh... And all networks suddenly did not work anymore. Had to connectto the console and fix it.

Then I saw that the adapter drew around 2-3 watts in idle and the speed... Well lets call it okay-ish. Itwas not that faster than the SSD via sata which in return did not justify the power increase in idle mode (9+vs 6+ watts). I added a screenshot with the differences. The orange line was the teston node1.

Overall I am very happy with my tripple node S920 Cluster. It draws around 25-30watts in total (incl. 3x S920, 3x 2.5GBit NICs via minipcie, 1x 5port 1GBit switch and 1x 8port 2.5GBit switch).

Although the cluster runs like totally flawless, and the VMs and Cotainers are working like a charm, I can not figure out why the backups are so slow.
Inter-node communication works over 2.5GBit and iperf3show solid 1.9-2.2GBit rates, the backups (ZSTD) report roughly 11-20MB/s (which is in parallel, so should be around 40-60MB/s which is not half the speed of 1GBit). I think this is due to CPU bottlenecks during backups.

But hey.. It is a super cheap and capable little machine, works like a horse, sips power like acolibri and transports everything like an elephant.
I have onenode with a PBS vm and one for file storage (CIFS&NFS) both with 2GB SSDs as passed through SSD.

So my advice is, get the quadcofeversions if you want something fanless, capable that does its work completely unnotived and gives you enough headroom for tinkering ♥

The S920 which I have got AMD GX-424CC which is consumes more power than GX 415-GA. This website says that ( https://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/301/AMD_G-Series_GX-415GA_vs_AMD_G-Series_GX-424CC.html ) GX-415 GA is 40% more power efficient. I am planning to replace the S920 CPU with GX-415 GA. I plan to get 415-GA from an old HP 620 thin client. Any thoughts on this approach?. Do you think I can some power with CPU swap?

EDIT: Looks like I cannot remove the CPU and seems to fixed permanently!
Well I replaced my S920 with the 415 CPU with a S930 (424CC CPU). This led to approximately 2-3W more powerdraw in "idle". Before it was around 5-7W and now it ia around 8-10W.

To reduce powerdraw I use amdctl with the following script. (you have to add the other states for s930 as it does not stop at id4 instead it stops at id7

amdctl_script.sh

Code:
#!/bin/bash

echo on > /sys/module/msr/parameters/allow_writes

amdctl -m -p0 -v86
amdctl -m -p1 -v88

Btw this update fixed my backup speed issue a little bit. It now runs with 33MB/s so the CPU seems to bottleneck it alot
