Funny. I would like to use one but now that everything is in the living space the noise is too much.

With the stock fans under control of the BMC (optimal profile) it's louder than I would want in a quiet office/room at idle. Under load it screams.
With the Noctua fans it's inaudible at idle and OKish at load in an office/living space situation. However, it runs at ~75C under load. Too hot for my taste but Intel says that's OK...

I have used a PID based script (Python) to take control of the fans via ipmitool. With stock fans at idle it's quiet enough for me in the living space. At load it's too loud for me. With Noctua fans the script has to be tuned to not stall the fans and no useful difference from BMC control.

All of this goes out the window if you put it in a cabinet or small closet without ventilation. You can't cheat reality and all those BTUs have to go somewhere...

I would love to keep this but we are moving and there isn't a place to put the rack away from living space.

If you need quiet, this isn't the best way to go. Being honest...

What's the power draw from the wall at idle? Trying to decide if it's better than my 80 watt idle dual E5-2670v2 box...

I have an ICX7250-48P in-use that i could possibly part with.

At idle it's ~30w according to my kill-a-watt.

The 7250 isn't interesting to me, looking for fan-less or silent mode such as 7150-24P or 48P.

That's a better number!

Many have replaced the fans to be "dead silent" in the 7250-48Ps. It's in the forum post.

Also, once you add just a couple POE devices, the "silent mode" toggles off and the fans run all the time - where, you need to replace the fans, just like the 7250s.

It's why i went with the 7250s over the 7150s. Well, that and the 8x 10GbE ports over the limited 7150 series. ;) Would have been nice to stack with the ICX7150-C12s, but I use Ansible so provisioning non-stacked units is trivial.

Let me chew on it for a moment. Co-worker has a 7150-24P, runs it with silent mode and 3 Unifi APs (nanoHD, 12ish watts each) and a cloud key, the fans stay off. It's my understanding that when in silent mode you have hard limited 150w power budget... I'll be using a single R710 and two Ras-Pi's with POE hats. I could, as I often am, be wrong ;)

I've also had a trade offer for the 7150-48zp that I turned down because of fan noise, I wanted that switch but... We're moving form the `burbs to NYC. There is no place to hide the rack. Old garment factory, pretty much one big space + bathrooms/laundry.

I could be wrong as well, as I now recall a PoE hard limit as well for some of those switches.

If you truly want silent, you could go for two ICX7150-C12P units stacked. 24 ports of PoE and a couple 10G ports in a truly fanless switch.

I'm going to poke around that enormous ICX thread. I'll get back one way or the other later this evening or first thing in the morning.

Those compact 7150's are nice and can be had for a song on flea-bay...

Thanks!

I'm going to pass on the 7250. If you want to talk about the server drop me a PM, I'll be flexible about price... Thanks.
