More than that, VMWare released a special version of ESXi with integrated VMware tools specially made for supporting nested virtualization.So you can run ESXi as a VM... Learn something new every day!
But, it is well understood that doing that is almost always going to be for testing/lab/education purposes. But I don't know, hardware keeps getting better, and containerization could be considered nested virtualization depending on how you look at it. There was a time at the beginning when virtualization itself really sucked, it wasn't until companies like Intel and AMD started putting paravirtualization acceleration features into the silicon that it really became a thing.
