Two quick questions:

1. Does the slog DEVICE need to be dedicated? Or can you have a dedicated slog PARTITION on a device that is used for other non-freenas purposes like file storage, etc. (Yes, I understand this will impact performance, but is it possible?)

2. I made question 2 into a poll. And yes I understand neither have capacitor/power protection nor the best choices for write endurance.

I don't expect very heavy workloads. Mostly nightly backups and things. Lets say about 100GB/day. (System has 96GB ram).

Thank you.

Definitely another drive than those two.
HGST 200 GB HUSSL or the mentioned S3700 (preferably at 200G for better perf)

Depending on workload you might get away with an Intel 750 nvme

Propably none of them.
For filer or backup use you do not need or want sync write so you do not use a ZIL or Slog device.

If you want an Slog for a slightly better security despite you need one with power loss protection, ultra low latency and high steady write performance with small blocksizes and QD1. Desktop SSDs are not suitable.

Thanks for the responses everyone! :)

miniknight, perhaps I don't need one. I figured it would be better to have one if needed and thus question 1 about sharing a device.

gea, while the primary purpose is backups, it may also have other uses like spinning up a backed up VM (rarely) or simple file sharing and/or other general use.

Sounds like I need to do more reading/learning before I plunge into this.
