Hi All,

I had my first degraded pool in my home box. One of the WD red Drives (Bestbuy 8tb pull) was generating cksum errors. I went out to get a new replacement drive from BB since they were down to 149 ea and i was able to get red label based on SN and model number. I replace the drive causing issues. Here is a snip of the resilvering process.

Few questions:
should i worry about this drives integrity?
Will smart test show if the drive is bad, if so what values should i be aware of?
Can anyone tell from the current smart results anything?
Anything else i can do to check for issues?

additional info:
Freenas is running as a vm on esxi 6.5 latest build. It has 64 GB ram. the HBA are pass through, the disks are in a SM hdd chassis that is brand new. no other issue reported with any other drive (many are WD Red 8tb from bestbuy). I also patched Freenas to latest version prior to resilver. The pool is fine now with replacement drive.

What controller(s) are these drives connected to, and via what cables / backplanes?

Cables can cause issues, but that is a ton of errors on a single drive, almost like you dd'ed something over much of the drive - the drive itself looks fine SMART-wise, and hasn't logged any media or interface errors either.

Failing drives usually show read and write errors in zpool status in addition to checksum errors.

I have had small numbers of only checksum errors appear sprinkled around on many or all drives in a single VDEV connected to an LSI card through a SAS2 expander backplane. The problem turned out to be a bad cable, which was hard to track down since they were all reading fine, and mostly writing fine, but some writes were being dropped on the way to the backplane, so the drive never saw them, and later when trying to read them, they showed up as checksum errors during a resilver after I replaced an actually failing drive.

After I replaced the bad cable, a scrub did more repairs and showed checksum errors.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up replacing the drive with a new WD red drive from BB when they were down to 149.99 each. The drive removed was a 128mb cache drive vs the replacement was 256mb cache. Not sure if that mattered or not. Since the replacement freenas has been happy. I did take the drive causing issues and ran it through diagnosis on another PC and it came back fine. I also did a full format and rechecked it. For now I got two spare drives in case of future issues.

Also the hardware is brand new supermicro HDD case and new lsi card, so I don't think it was a cable or hardware issue.
