My problem with that is i can't activate it. So i just looking for nice free server os to put on here. I just using it as a file sever to store my files on. Thank you for the help.

Almost all Linux systems have gui, they can used with gui. Some even have browser ui's.

Thanks. My cousin got me an activation key for windows server 2012 R2. He partners with Microsoft and had a few keys left for him to use. Thanks again.

i'd recommend going to at least win2019, this way you will get updates for a while.

Just so you know, Server 2012r2 has reached end of support in October 2023, there will be no security updates for this version.

For just a file share, Open Media Vault or Truenas would be choices and both are really free. As mentioned any Linux/BSD OS could be set up to do this.

If you don't care about legalities, there are many sites on the web that will sell you newer keys for cheap. They are supposed to be 100% legal, but I have my doubts when they are selling things like Windows LTSC IoT keys which are not even something I can get in my company's A5/E5 account.
