I picked up a Broadcom HBA 9500-8i Tri-Mode Storage Controller that I will be using on for my Unraid server. I have seen some discussions about this but Im a newb. Can anyone hold my hand and show me the steps? I have seen what appears to be a lot of ways to do it but I'm not sure the correct path to take.

Is this the correct location to get the firmware and tool for what is needed?

I have bricked things before so I am a little gun-shy at the moment.

I know that some cards will come ready to go and may only need an updated firmware.

IT mode means taking a RAID card and converting it to a HBA. The 9500-8i is already an HBA.

SO it will be good to go once I place in it in the case and plug in the drives? Nothing to do other then install the cable and hook up the drives? Thanks that is awesome and a lot less stressful! WOOT

yeah, normally those cards don't really need a driver but I am not familiar with Unraid. But I am sure Unraid would have drives for those cards given how common they are in the server space.

Those cards always need a driver to work to be precise, but I think you wanted to say that you don't need to fiddle that manually with most linux distris. :)
