I had a question. Is there a way to take a LSI 9265-8i and remove the cache module and battery and flash it to IT mode so it behaves like a 9210-8i? I have run out of the 9210's but have a ton of 9265's.

Not familiar with 9265-8i. If it is based on 2208 you can turn it into 2308 based HBAs like HP H220 (9205-8i / 9207-8i etc) IT mode.

Search for @vanfawx posts on this forum.

Yeah, according to Broadcom docs, the 9265-8i is based on SAS2208 chipset, so good chance it can run the SAS2308 firmware. Just be aware, it may be functional, but it might also throw some error condition, like alarms or error LEDs.

Did you find a way to do this? I'm trying to get the same card working with unRAID
it should be possible. there's a thread somewhere on this forum talking about flashing 2208 to 2308 firmware. just follow that and it should work. just be warned it might trigger alarm.

The P20 software allows JBOD mode that I've been running on 20+ disks with server 2016 seamlessly for months, with a 9265cv-8e. May not be necessary to flash?
Edit: I say P20, but it may be P19. Mr 5.14 23.24.0-0019 firmware seems very stable with JBOD, but I have not tried with unraid or similar.

So you are saying the latest firmware supports JBOD? Is P20 a firmware version?
As far as I can tell, the 9265 and 9285 are identical except for connector location. See:
FAQ - LSI 2nd-Generation 6Gb/s MegaRAID SATA+SAS Controller Cards (704 KB)
See image I posted in other thread showing 9285 running multiple disks in JBOD.
https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/school-me-on-jbod-storage.23161/
And see this for enabling JBOD:
Configuring JBOD with a LSI 2208 controller — Lucid Solutions
I cannot comment as to if this is sufficient for unraid or similar, but I use drives in a mix of raid and storage pool on the same controller with H-V 2016.
