High-Level Question:

I purchased 10x used NetApp HGST 10K SAS drives which contain locked firmware; I would appreciate your assistance getting these to work. Does anyone know where to find firmware to use the drive in a "normal" configuration? The drives came with 520b sectors, and I've already formatted to 512 using sg_format. I've carefully studied the forums and spent days researching.

HGST NetApp HUC109090CSS600 900GB 2.5" SAS

SAS HBA Card:
3x Dell H310, crossflashed to IT mode. Running P19.

Server:
HP dl380 Gen9
All HGST drives connected to Dell H310.
Debian Linux OS

What I've Tried Thus Far:

1. sg_format --format --size=512 /dev/sg2 -v
Result: Error occurred, would not begin formatting

2. sg_format --format --size=512 --six -v /dev/sg2
Result: Appeared to complete the format. Upon reboot, 'fdisk -l' showed the drives.
Could not write any information to the drives, including creation of any partition table.

4. Ran HP firmware update ISO (HP SUM July 2017)
Result: HP SUM didn't detect anything that needed an update.

Conclusion. I would welcome your input on how to get these drive to work (firmware flash or otherwise). I appreciate your time.

Hello, what was the outcome of these specific drives?

Did you ever get them working?

EDIT: I found the firmware listed on these forums, though it's listed under Dell - not HGTS:

These drives are also known as the HGST Ultrastar C10K900, to make it easier to research.

A nice review showing them crushing the comparable Seagate 10k models (for the most part):


But add in the firmware from Dell above, which was after this review and the firmware lists faster sequential speeds, and you just may have a drive that edges out the Seagate completely now.
