Wouldn't it be great if we could find a box that has a RAID ROM encoded for it's dip switch settings ... which we could overwrite with a ZFS based variant ...?
While we're at it, isn't ZFS better for even Mirroring? Because where as conventional mirroring works fine if a drive completely fails -- but if it's corrupt, how does it know which to believe?
ZFS knows; it's the drive with the accurate checksum. Even if both drives had discrepancies.
Same for a 3-drive RAID-5 ... where as XOR with 3 drives could make for ambiguities and "guess work..." with ZFS, if it doesn't checksum, it ain't right.
Anyway, thoughts ?
