A while back I moved from a Plextor drive to a Samsung NVME in my main desktop. I don’t have another device that natively takes the m.2 format so I was hoping I could find an external enclosure for it that was USB based.

My drive is: plextor M6e(A) M.2 2280 PCIe Gen2 x2, looks like B+M key (dual notches)

M6e(A) M.2 2280

Any ideas if an external usb enclosure exists? eBay is full of near misses. Lots of the ones there list PCIe in the title but specifically state they don’t with with PCIe drives.

Any ideas? Thanks!

USB to PCIe like that doesn't exist. Thunderbolt is an option, but it's very expensive (many times the cost of your SSD).

If you want to reuse the SSD you can get an adapter to use it in a normal PCIe slot easy and cheap.

On Aliexpress, there are quite a few adapters or enclosures for m.2/NGFF SSDs - something like this: USB 3.0 to M.2 NGFF SSD Mobile hard disk box Adapter Card External Enclosure Case for m2 SSD USB 3.0 Case 2230/2242/2260/2280-in HDD Enclosure from Computer & Office on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

I have two like these: USB3.0 TO M.2 NGFF SSD Enclosure Solid State Drive External Case Adapter UASP SuperSpeed 6Gbps for 2230 2242 M.2 NGFF SSD-in HDD Enclosure from Computer & Office on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group and they work very well.

Edit: As I was reminded, the OP meant NVMe. Those links above are for SATA m.2 SSDs. Sorry for that.
