I know these are going to be a bit pricey, but there are 8x 128GB 2400MHz LRDIMMs for $6K and 2666MHz for $8K on ebay. These are under $600 ea so under $4700 for 1TB of RAM and the seller has a bunch. That's not too much of a premium for big capacity dimms.

Would these work with 1st gen Xeon Scalable CPUs? on the X11DPH-T manual, it should that only 2nd gen CPUs can support 16GB DRAM density. Already have dual 8176 using 2 sticks of 64GB RAM

Not sure it helps; but I can tell you that my 128G RDimm modules work on my 1st gen CPU + SM boards - sometimes a bit flaky but that might be due to me mixing ranks

That's good to know. I was hoping it's because Supermicro is just being overly conservative on their documents. Upgrading my firmware on the X11DPH-T isn't an option as well since only BIOS v2.1 works with the 8176 ES CPUs. I'm hoping to see if I can use 2 of these with my existing pair of 2x 4Rx4 64GB 2666 LRDIMMS

I remember to see them sold at ~1K EUR in Europe ... oopsi. Still 'cheap' even with VAT + Customs fees in mind.

I think I run 3 128G (8R) + 2 64G (4R) + 1 NVDimm 16GB (4R or less), so it should work - but as I mentioned at least mine are not so stable, it can happen that one or more modules are gone after a reboot (and show up again on further reboots).

But since 512G is plenty for FreeNas its no issue for me;)
