Looking for the best value for money on 3 items. Any advice on where to buy these items for very good value for money is welcome! I am a basic home server user and really just build and do stuff for fun on them.
I recently missed out on the chance to buy 64GB ECC DDR3 RAM for 60 euros so;

Looking for:

  • 16x4GB DDR3 PC3-10600R 1333MHz
  • 2x - 1 or 2 tb HDD
  • 2x - 120 or 250 GB HDD
EU, any help will be appriciated!

Go to your local craigslist or simular. Maybe a local computer forum to your country? Often people dump 1-2tb drives for cheap these days

@Sable, i got some Hitachi Ultrastar 2TB for sale if you are interested, just PM me.
With regard to that SSD on ebay, i checked some comments over at AlieExpress for the same SSD, one buyer opened it up and there were no Hynix chips, but some tigo chips... so be careful. That seller on eBay have many negative feedbacks too!

I've got a lot of 4GB sticks of ECC laying around. Do you have any preferences as to the specifics?
I have both PC3 and PC3L. I also have heat-shielded and non. And I also have a variety of different ranks (1Rx4 , 2Rx4).

Sounds like your just looking for the cheapest full set of 16 you can get, but I'm not sure what your motherboard supports so I gotta ask :)

You'll need the Quanta model number at the least, the mainboard details would be even better, so that RAM can be chosen that is compatible with it. Your issue could be anything from timing, ranking, voltage, faulty DIMM etc etc :)

Oh sorry!

These Quanta servers have a reworked Foxconn motherboard (DA0S2MMB8B0).

The link was dead for me (currently on mobile at an airport parking lot).

It looks like that motherboard supports only dual rank (2Rx4) pc3 or pc3L memory. (Atleast that's all I saw it being sold with online)

If you purchased 1Rx4 RAM (single rank), that may explain your issues.

Let me know if you're interested in my RAM and I'll work with you on price.

The specs of that RAM sounds correct and probably should work.

Any updates on if you got your server up and running?

If not, could you elaborate on what's happening when it's "not working"?
- Does the server even try to turn on? (or begin POST?)
- Are there any flashing lights when trying to turn it on? (I.E. 5 consecutive flashes, or anything like that?)
- Did you buy this memory "Used" or "New"? (this isn't really likely to be an issue, but it could be helpful in determining your issue)

Lastly, if you have any other server boards on-hand that can test your memory, I think that would be an important first step.

If the specs of the RAM that you used before are the same as the current sticks, then yes, it sounds like you may have gotten some bad sticks.

Of all of the equipment I've ever bought or tested, RAM seems to be the most finicky and likely to have issues. It's usually a pretty rough experience buying RAM from someone you don't have regular contact with from my experience.

If you need a new set of RAM, let me know and I'll quote you a good price, but I'll test each stick (again) before making any selling commitments to make sure you don't have to go through the same fiasco. Keep me updated if anything new comes up!

Hi,

I don't have 16 4GB sticks, but I can offer 8 (or maybe even 16) 8GB sticks of Samsung 1600MHz DDR3 RDIMMs.

These are just lying around, and I'm not sure how much they're worth -- make me an offer?

I'm based in the UK, whereabouts are you?

I also have 4x 1TB 2.5" hybrid (SSHD) drives, though I'm not sure they'll be suitable for your use case? And a single 250GB Samsung 840 SSD.
