I never purchased one but that board should also run on pure 12v from a power brick.

Less than 60w idle with a v4 cpu should certianly be obtainable from what others have indicated.

Unfortunately as stated above, I have contacted them and they will not exchange (outside of their 60 day refund/replacement period).

Given Jointer's experience i'd probably be leaning towards a defective IMC.
It's been a while but......

So it seems the Asrock X99 Extreme 3 simply won't support Haswell and Crucial DDR4 Registered Memory running at 1866mhz, despite supporting it just like the E5-1628L v3 does. I've just tested with a genuine (non-ES) E5-1603 v3 with all pads intact and Windows Server absolutely will not boot unless the ram is running at DDR4-1333 or less. Only V4 E5's will boot at DDR4-1866 on this board.

Seems the E5-2628L V3 was running correct for a Haswell Xeon in this board to begin with.... Very very interesting.....

Hello,

can anyone please tell me more about the power usage on the Intel Xeon E5 2630L V4 ES.

Currently I have installed on my testing server at home an Intel I3-7100 with 64GB of RAM. The power consumption is on IDLE 38-41 Watts and on load 65-73 Watts.

I need to change the platform because I need more RAM, my current plan is to buy an Intel Xeon E5 2630L V4 ES from eBay with an Asrock X99 Tachi motherboard. I hope the power usage will be similar in IDLE I know the power usage on load will be more as with my current setup but my question is how much more. I have a similar setup on my workplace but with an Intel Pentium G4560 instead of the I3-7100, the Pentium CPU needs 12 Watts lees power as the I3-7100 although the Pentium G4560 has a higher TDP as the I3-7100.

Hardware setup:
1. Intel I3-7100
2. MSI B250 GAMING M3
3. 4x16 GB DDR4 Crucial 2400
4. 2x Western Digital Red 27/7 HDD
5. 1x Samsung 850 Evo 256GB
6. 27/7 Server Power Supply Gold 550 Watt

Can anyone please post a screenshot from HW-Monitor from the power section where the package watt consumption is given?

@cij 40w idle e5 systems require very careful design, but are possible. The unknown is the ES chip (as its ES)

Sorry don’t know but idle of all the 10 cores should be essentially save, I have an e5-2640v4 I can throw in a board and test but probably won’t get to it before new year, I plan to use an X10SRH so it has SAS so maybe not a great indication, I was thinking to try a minimum power 2640v4 build based on X10SRM and use 12v only etc.
I was pretty sure 30-40w idle should be possible.

2630v4,2630lv4,2640v4 should all idle same, max power usage should be less for the ‘l’ chip

I ran a few comparisons with E5 vs E3 idle power consumption and E3 came ahead by a good margin (30w vs sth around 55w).

I had not been able to push E5 <50W with standard activated components (x10sri iirc), but I have not tried to the extreme level since the difference was good enough for my use case. E5 CPU was 2630Lv4 M0 - would have to see if I have any notes left.

Here is a quick power consumption shot from my setup that has now been built - Supermicro X10SRM-F, Xeon E5-2630L V4 QK3K, 32GB DDR4 ECC. 60GB M.2 SSD, HP P410 SAS card with 4 intel ssds (RAID10) and 2 7200rpm western digitals (RAID1). Running off a Rosewill 650W gold psu. Noctua narrow ilm cooler and 3 120mm case fans.

I forgot to grab complete idle power draw but this is it running ESXi with a single active server 2012 VM using 4 cores and 8GB of ram, the VM was hosting 12 players on KF2 whilst I took that photo. 71W isn't too bad. It was hitting 77W at some points and dipping to 69W at others.







I'll try and shut down the VM and grab the power consumption whilst it's completely idle.

I'm running 2x xeon E5-2650L V4 at 70-80W idle on a supermicro x10drl-it (probably can squeeze 5W more by disabling 10GB-T adapters) , (1 WD BLUE + 1 PCIE NVME drive). At full load it hits 150-170.
What is your idle and full load power draw?

@Kat sounds good and it's a very cool setup. I think you can do a lot with your system.

What is your idle and full load power draw?

Hello there,

Thank you for the thread, very informative :) I wanted to get an X99 mother board and wait for cheap xeons coming but I wasn't patient enough :p So I picked:

MSI X99 GAMING PRO for 100€
2*4 GB ECC REG DDR4 for 20€
XEON 1650v3 ES for 150€

I will receive the xeon in 2/3 weeks and can make some tests then. It is a QEZ0, bought from armyourdesk on ebay. Does anyone knows if that is a good pick ? The CPU-Z screenshot indicates Model F and stepping 1. I looked at cpu-world but couldn't get any clue. The same QZE0 type is also on sale on Aliexpress and there is another screenshot from HWInfo which indicates it is an ES2 and the stepping is L0. I read somewhere in the thread that ES2 was generally ok to use. So what do you think about this build and this ES cpu ? Is it fine or am I running for troubles ?

i have this randomly when try to load a heavy work (build chromium, for example) or simple when the pc is in idle


seems not exist new microcode for this cpu, and i think never do exist anymore


any one have the same problems in linux with the Broadwell ES cpus? is fixable? or need try got/change to OEM processors?

Did you hear (bad) things about this ES CPU ?

I have not posted feedback on the thread yet because I havn't properly tested the CPU. I just got an heatsink this week so I'll be able to bench it soon.

They ship real fast, I had it in a few days. Packaging is good. The product was there. I didn't pay enought attention on ebay's page but this one as a lower speed than the retail model. I just got it to POST, then the temps increase quickly without any heatsink so I turned the power off before 80°c. I asked on a forum if the temps were normal for a processor without an heatsink and even the 15 years + hardware old timers were shocked I would even do that. Hum hum.

So yeah, I got it, it POSTs and it fits the product description. That's all I can say for now, I cannot tell if the temps are normal.

I have a question regarding selling my Xeon v3 and v4 ES CPUs and matching motherboards:

As I have switched to AMD Threadripper and being quite happy with my current setup I am looking to sell the following items on Ebay or potentially via private transaction:

1x Asus Z10PE-D8 WS motherboard
1x Supermicro X10DAi motherboard
2x Intel Xeon E5-2690 v3 ES, QEYJ(ES2)
2x Intel Xeon E5-2650 v4 ES, QHV6

My question is whether there might be wider interest if I sell each component individually or whether I should bundle the CPU pairs each with a motherboard? I have tested and actually worked with any of the 4 combination between motherboards and CPUs and they are confirmed to perfectly work in Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, ESXi, Unraid, running Virtual Machines and the like. Might it add value to sell them as a motherboard/CPU combination as they are proven to work or any other opinions? This is strictly not a post to solicit interest but merely asking for advice.

I would say yes, it is certainly interesting to buy an ES with a guarantee that it's usable.

I would recommend to try to sell first a bundle with any combination of cpu/mb. If you receive offers from different people for both a cpu and a mb then sell both.
