Be sure it has the latest BIOS, which supports BW-E.
Asus and Gigabyte MB's have problems posting really early sample ES chips, take that in mind. For example, my Gigabyte X99 UD3 w/ latest BIOS doesn't want to post anything on my 2690 V4 (QHVE5) but my 2630 V4 (SR2R7, but is a later ES chip)
You can take a gamble, or just ask the seller for accurate info (sellers usually don't answer the questions, idk why)

Some good options with optimized frequency:
14-core: E5-2690 V4 ES @ 2,4ghz (3,0ghz all core boost) (550 dollars)
8-core: E5-2667 V4 ES @ 2,9ghz (3,0ghz all core boost) (350 dollars)
12-core: E5-2687W V4 ES @ 2,9ghz (3,0ghz all core boost) (around 680 dollars, out of stock)

These CPUs of yours, do they identify as ES in HWinfo?
Because i guess they are just remarked.

And i see - 2690 is nice, however my target was not to go too much insane, the goal was to get 8 core highest clocked...
But i see the ES price scale with the computing power...

The CPU is an ES yeah via HWinfo and CPU-Z. It's quite weird that it has a SSpec, which should indicate a retail sample but despite this it's an ES.
That's a nasty scratch.. never seen that kind of damage on the pads.. mine were pristine.

The scratch is nasty, so i used it as secondary CPU, tested everything i could - full DIMMs Memtest, PCIE slots to this CPU, checked voltage, temperatures of the cores, QPI linking speed - all seems fine. So either the most damaged pin/pad is unused, duplicate (power) or does work.
I was even considering using conductive lacquer or in extreme soldering, if i find something wrong and the seller would not accept return.
But all seems fine... still i am not happy about it at all.

My 2690 V4 has a L0 stepping and doesn't post on Gigabytes MB, is that a really early stepping or not?

An ES 2683 V3 will score around 1500 in Cinebench 15 (the ones floating on Ebay for around 220ish).

A QS and Retail version 2683 depending on how optimized your system will score around 1700-1730 stock. Overclocked 4.5% will yield you between 1790-1830. So 1680 might be lower than normal but much higher than the 1500 ES hit.

It really depends how well optimized your system is and how it handles turbo multipliers. I would say 1680 is within margin.

Just run HWInfo64, it will tell you if it is ES, QS, or retail (or OEM). To put your mind at ease.

How much will be dual cpus performence in Cinebench R15, when single is 1656 and 1681 points?
3200, 3100,3000, 2900 points in Cinenech R15? Is there anybody with E5-2683V3 cpus?
Shall I got these retail versions instead cheaper QS versions?

It should have worked, Its possible that the flashing process was a dud. I could sell you mines I have 2
E5 2683 v4 they both work they came off of a HP dual socket motherboard. How ever you will still be in the same situation if the motherboard bios wasn't flashed properly. You have to without a shadow of a doubt, have seen the motherboard boot up after a bios flash otherwise your taking a shot in the dark.
I've asked a good friend of mine to assist me with this matter. He has some connections with service center team. Well, what i have got by now is that they spent the day trying to boot the system, detecting bugs, flashing BIOS, etc. As for now, nothing seems to work, but the guy from the service center did tell that the motherboard had a clear signs of soldering and other interruptions (scratches, etc.). This may explain why it does not start. They will still be trying to fix it today. Funny fact, the CPU does heat up (however, the system still won't boot), i wonder whether it means that the CPU works fine with the Mobo but the mobo itself is not working properly?

I may return this mobo to the shop i purchased it from and try some of Asrock x99 mobos. They all seem to support early ES CPUs with the BIOS 3.00+, what do you think about it?

Well the screenshot is up, its Stepping 2 /R2 .. so i'd assume its not too bad. On the other hand there are severla steppings after it so they found some more issues... Decisions decisions;)
So since my x10dri seems to be faulty I ran the tests on a single cpu board but at least wanted to provide the feedback that the CPU is fine and not showing any issues so far. Performance is nice;)
Cinebech 1720, Base Clock 2.3, All Core Turbo 2.6.
Its not as fast as some of the others but cheaper at ~$350

i wonder whether i should get another msi x99a raider or go for the ASRock X99 Extreme4?
Both boards are fine, but you may still need a V3 CPU to flash the board to use the latest firmware.
Unless you are lucky enough to find a board already with the latest firmware.
It happened to me, my MSI Raider need a firmware update to use ES V4 chip. So I order a ES V3 chip from China, then I ran across a Ascrock OC formula for $160, brought the Ascrock. It happened to have the latest firmware. Plugin the ES V4 chip and booted up fine.

That's pre-QS or very early engineering sample. Gigabyte X99 motherboards only accept V4 ES Xeons (QS) with the following steppings: B0/M0/R0. L0 is not compatible.
Ok I see. Btw I just ordered the 2667 V4 again, but this one is a very early ES too. LO stepping, QHVD.

I got a MSI X99S motherboard for a bargain, only 105 euros and it has the latest BIOS which supports BW-E. Not bad :)
I know that this 2667 V4 will not work with the Gigabyte X99 UD3, that's why I got the MSI one which supports those very early ES's.

Hey, guys, fantastic thread, was fortunate to find it, really a lifesaver.

I would like to get a clarification about the ECC memory quiz, as far as I understand it is more of a hardware combination question rather then a rule. So I would like to ask considering a system I build, I will have z10pe-d16 mobo and dual xeon e5 2630 v4 es, am I orced to use ECC memory to boot this one up, or any ddr4 ram set will work ?
